PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, a full-time temporary PhD position is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at the department.

The position is part of the project “Dissecting the role of islet non-beta populations’ identity maintenance in the development of monogenic diabetes”, funded by the University of Bergen. The focus of our research is to seek novel insights into the cellular and molecular mechanism of cell fate acquisition and maintenance. The research environment at the Center for Diabetes Research is dynamic and stimulating, with strong traditions in genetics and cell biology. The work will be part of a larger project financed by the Research Council of Norway program FORSKER20, and includes a possibility of a research stage abroad (Switzerland). The main supervisor will be Professor Simona Chera.

About the project/work tasks:

  • We are seeking a dedicated PhD candidate with a strong interest in the cellular and molecular biology of pancreatic islets.
  • The candidate will apply a combination of mouse genetics, omics, cellular and molecular biology methods (genetic cell tracing, genetic cell ablation, cell isolation and sorting, immunofluorescence staining and imaging) to analyse the endocrine cell-fate decisions in a previously generated in-house mouse model of MODY3.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • the applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in life sciences (biology, biochemistry, biomedical research or similar).
  • necessary training will be provided by the group, however the following qualifications will be considered positively:
  1. experience with basic cellular and molecular biology techniques, e.g. tissue sampling, nucleic acid isolations, PCR, cloning
  2. experience with immunological methods, including flow cytometry and immunofluorescence staining; confocal imaging
  3. experience in work with experimental animals, including FELASA B approval
  • the candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • the applicant must be fluent in oral and written English

Language qualifications.

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD position:

PhD positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
