The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. 

The Department has more than 1800 students on bachelor level, 600 master students, and over 240 PhDs and postdocs. The overall staff of the Department is close to 370 employees, about 280 of these in full time positions. The full time tenured academic staff is 75, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

About the position

A two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Informatics, the University of Oslo, to work on Security and Risk Management for 5G Networks, as part of the Raksha research project funded by the Research Council of Norway. Three months of teaching related duties can be added to the position at time of appointment, depending on the qualifications of the candidate.

The starting date must be no later than 1 April 2024.

To be eligible, candidates must not be a citizen of any other countries than European countries, NATO countries, and Five-Eyes countries. This is because cyber security research may involve collaboration with defence and national security organizations where security clearance may be needed. 

No one can be appointed for more than one postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Job description

The postdoctoral fellow will work in the context of the Digital Security Group’s research projects, in particular as part of the Raksha project, funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project intersects with other research projects in which the Digital Security Group at UiO is involved (e.g., CyberHunt, JCOP and PHOENI2X), and hence cross-project collaboration should be expected.

The postdoc fellowship will focus on technologies for Cyber Security in general, with specific focus on Security and Risk Management for 5G Networks. Research activities will typically involve some of the following: theoretical modelling, development of prototype software tools, analysis and experimentation, writing of scientific publications, as well as some project management.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree (or must at least have submitted the PhD dissertation by the application deadline) in cyber security.

The focus of this position is to work within ICT and mobile network security; hence the following qualifications are required and must be documented:

  • In terms of publications, applicants must have a relevant track record in terms of publications in one or more of the following: ICT (information and communication technology), cyber security, or societal safety.
  • Experience in organizing academic events and workshops, especially related to CTI, cyber security or societal safety, is an advantage. Other dissemination activities should be clearly documented. For example, the applicant may have published blog posts relevant to the position.
  • Experience in academic teaching related to ICT, cyber security or societal safety, is an advantage.
  • The application should describe how the applicant’s PhD project and other research activities are relevant to the position.

The candidate must be able to express themself fluently in English, both in writing and orally. It is expected that the candidate can work independently and take the initiative to make contacts and collaborate with the national and international research community. Applicants with teaching experience at a bachelor/master’s/PhD level should mention this fact in their application.

The successful candidate will be selected based on relevant knowledge and experience in the areas described above, as well as academic results and scientific publications.

Applicants who are in the process of completing their PhD degree must submit their PhD thesis by the application deadline January 31, 2024.
