Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at CEED, the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo

Starting date as soon as possible.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is for a period of two years.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Job description

The successful candidate will join a team of geophysicists and a new project exploring the geothermal potential of Baia Mare region situated in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, Romania. The project will use new and existent geophysical, geochemical and hydrogeological data for imaging and modelling in detail the geological structure and for assessing its geothermal potential. This is a collaboration with University of Bucharest (Romania), and the project is funded by the EEA grants scheme.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to work with the new magnetotelluric data (MT) and seismic data planned to be collected in summer/autumn 2021. In addition, she/he will be part of a team that will built a regional 3D lithospheric model using various geoscientific data.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition is to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in the fields of geophysics. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment.
• Programming experience and experience working with geophysical data are requirements for this position. Documented research experience with processing and modelling MT data is highly desirable. Excellent knowledge of mathematics, physics and computing are necessary.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
