The Institute of Health and Society is one of three institutes at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The Institute covers various disciplines and consists of six departments: General Practice, Health Sciences, Health Management and Health Economics, Medical Ethics, Community Medicine and Global Health and Nursing Science.

The Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of disease, health and health systems. Culture, environment, economics, society and biology play direct and indirect roles. Our teaching responsibilities include seven Master’s programs, one Bachelor program and part of the Faculty’s medical school and PhD-program. We employ about 220 FTE and have almost 700 Bachelor and Master students. Annual income is about 200 mill NOK, half of which is external funding. Our researchers play an active part of public policy and disseminate new knowledge through many channels.

Job description

Position as Postdoctoral Research fellow is available at the Department of Health Management and Health Economics (HELED). The project is part of the Norwegian Center for Health Services Research, NORCHER, funded by Research Council of Norway led by HELED at the Institute of Health and Society, University of Oslo. The purpose of NORCHER is to develop, implement and evaluate models for health-service delivery that encourage equal access, high quality and cost-effectiveness. NORCHER aims to build institutional expertise and capacity within the area of health service research.

The fellowship is a fulltime position and will be for a period of 3 years, of which 10% is devoted to compulsary work for the department.

Tentative startup date 1.3.2021. It is expected that the appointed person is doing the job in Norway (except from the expected travels).

More about the position

Researchers at HELED have for many years contributed to comparative analyses of health care performance research. The position relates to an ambitious project on human preferences contributing with new knowledge by conducting economic experiments after pre-registering of experimental protocol. The project will involve collaboration with several international partners, including partners in Australia, UK and China, as between country comparisons is one of the aims of the project.

The successful candidate will take part in designing, preparing and conducting economic experiments, as well as analyzing the results. Some travel must therefore be expected in connection with planning and conducting experiments abroad.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

  • A doctoral degree or degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (Ph.D) is required, and the topic of the Ph.D must be in areas that are relevant to the project, such as economics, health economics, experimental economics or empirical methods for preference elicitation. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. For applicants who have not defended their dissertation, it is a prerequisite that the doctoral thesis is submitted for assessment before the application deadline expires. It is a prerequisite for joining the postdoctoral position that the dissertation is approved.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • Professional and personal prerequisites and motivations for carrying out the research activities in the research group
  • Preparation of scientific manuscripts in English
  • Application of economic experiments as a research method, e.g. designing and conducting economic experiments
  • Applied choice modelling or related statistical / econometric methods
  • Advanced user of statistical software such as STATA for estimating models and/or conducting Monte Carlo simulations
  • Health economic theory on incentives and behavior

The ideal candidate is motivated and self-driven and has a genuine curiosity and interest in research. Interviews will be held and references collected. Applicants who are invited to an interview can be asked to give a presentation.
