The Norwegian Institute in Rome (DNIR) is a university centre that conducts and hosts research, training and outreach in relation to archaeology, art history and cultural history in Italy and the Mediterranean region. This includes studies of antiquity and its broader impact on European culture, religion, language, literature and society. The Institute is owned by the University of Oslo. It is a bridgehead in Italy for academics from Norway and assists visiting researchers and students, especially within the humanities, from all the Norwegian universities.
A Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1352) in Ancient Studies is available at the Norwegian Institute in Rome, University of Oslo. Starting date early 2024.
The Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship is funded by the Norwegian Institute in Rome and is associated with the Institute’s ongoing research, teaching and outreach.
The position is within Ancient Studies in a broad sense, targeting applicants from fields including Archaeology, History, Art History, Religious Studies and Theology. Applicants should propose an original, high-quality research project to be carried out during the fellowship. The proposed research project must deal with theme(s) within the time span from the Archaic to the Late Antique period, and geographically within the Mediterranean region, with pronounced relevance to Italy and Rome. The successful applicant will participate in teaching courses in Rome and in Oslo. Potential course topics are the history, archaeology, art, and architecture of Rome, as well as the cultural heritage and reception of Rome. Examples are:

The position is available for a period of 3.5 years, with 25 % of the position devoted to teaching and administrative duties.
The successful candidate is expected to participate in the Institute’s ongoing research environment and networks, and to contribute actively to their further development.
The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.
- PhD or equivalent academic qualifications within History, Archaeology, Art History, Religious Studies, Theology, or a comparable discipline with a specialization relevant to the ancient history and/or archaeology of Italy and Rome
- A proposal for an original, high-quality research project dealing with theme(s) within the time span from the Archaic to the Late Antique period, and geographically within the Mediterranean region, and with clear relevance to Italy and Rome
- Experience with university teaching at undergraduate level
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. Command of a Scandinavian language is a strong advantage. Knowledge of Italian is desirable.
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the doctoral thesis having been approved.
In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:
- The proposed research project’s scholarly merit, research-related relevance and level of theoretical and methodological sophistication.
- The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out the project within the allotted time frame, and potential for contributing to the Institute’s academic development. according to the objectives in the Institute’s strategic plan.
- The applicant's competence in regard to contributing to courses in the history, archaeology and cultural history of ancient Italy, and particularly Rome.
- Weight will be ascribed to documented pedagogical qualifications acquired through education and experience, outreach experience, previous projects (including acquisition of funding) and administration.
- Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines.
