The Department of Education was established in 1938 and is one of three departmentsand is one of three departmentsat The Faculty ofEducational Sciences.The research is based on traditions from both the social and the human sciences, and the department thusaccommodates great breadth in topics and perspectives. The department employs approximately 100 people; 49 scientific staff, 35 doctoral andpost-doctoral students, and 16 administrative/technical staff. The number of students is approximately 900.

Job description

A position as a research fellow is vacant at the Department of Education. Currently the Faculty is engaged in a research-based evaluation (EVA2020) of the renewal of the curriculum for primary and secondary education in Norway. The position is offered in connection to this evaluation, but represents an independent research project.

One aspect of the curriculum renewal (‘fagfornyelsen’) concerns the development of database instruments and applications. Educational authorities offer digital tools to be used by school practitioners for purposes such as professional development, curriculum analysis, and lesson planning. Instruments such as these are devices developed to produce certain effects, and are part of governing structures in that they organize relationships between the state, local authorities and professionals in schools. We welcome applications that focus on, for example, policy instrumentations, emerging knowledge infrastructures, what characterizes the networks of actors involved in the development and maintenance of digital tools, or how curriculum knowledge is constructed, enacted and legitimized in educational practices.

More about the position

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory workload of 25 % that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance.

The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in research group Curriculum Studies, Leadership and Educational Governance (CLEG)

Qualification requirements

  • Successful completion of a Master’s degree programme or similar higher education programme in the subject area in question or in another relevant subject area
  • The grade for the Master’s degree (120 ECTS) must at least be B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent, and the degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS
  • Familiarity with the Norwegian school system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in a Scandinavian language and English

Personal skills

In the assessment of applicants, emphasis will be put on:

  • The quality of the project description; the description of the research topic, the specific problems to be studied, the choice of scientific theory and method, and the proposed schedule for the study. A project description of 8- 10 pages must be submitted with the application.
  • The applicants’ academic and personal qualifications for completing the research training program
  • The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the position
  • Good ability to collaborate nationally and internationally
