The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics.


The Department has more than 1800 students on bachelor level, 600 master students, and over 240 PhDs and postdocs. The overall staff of the Department is close to 370 employees, about 280 of these in full time positions. The full time tenured academic staff is 75, mostly Full/Associate Professors..

Position as PhD Research Fellowship in Computer Science available at the Department of Informatics. Starting date as soon as possible.

Depending on the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, the fellowship periods will be for either 3 years (fully devoted to research and research training) or 4 years (with a compulsory work load of 25% consisting of e.g. teaching and supervision duties and research assistance).

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

More about the position

The digital transformation of modern society effects all areas of our daily life. This includes also health services for which security and privacy concerns as especially relevant. Industrial nations have spent huge amount of money and effort to build secure eHealth infrastructures. Similarly, eHealth is becoming more and more important in developing countries. However, due to limited resources, security aspects are very often neglected in these contexts.

The successful candidate for this PhD fellowship position will contribute to research in the field of security of eHealth system. The focus will be on resource constrained environments that can be found in developing or emerging economies.

The PhD fellowship will be part of a collaboration of the research groups “Digital Security” (SEC) and “Information Systems” (IS). Both groups manage several research projects with national and international partners from both industry and academia. The IS group coordinates the development of the open source eHealth platform DHIS2, and are involved in a range of implementation activities in the global south.

The SEC group works on different topics in the area of information security including cyber threat intelligence, privacy and cryptography, and hosts the UiO Ethical Hacking Team. Both groups have a dynamic and interactive working environment with relatively good gender balance, consisting of multiple PhD and Post Doc researchers in addition to full-time and part-time staff. It is expected that the candidate takes an active part in activities around DHIS2, which could be improving security of the DHIS2 software (Security by Design), implementing security management systems, and the like.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in computer science
  • foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • previous knowledge and experience in information security is desirable.
  • previous knowledge and experience in global health issues is an asset.
  • fluent oral and written communication skills in English

Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2020 to complete the final exam.

Grade requirements:

The norm is as follows:

  • the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.
