The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD-research fellowship in neuroscience at the group of Synaptic Physiology Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Oslo. The project, which is supported by the institute, aims to study how noradrenaline release contributes to mnemonic function in the hippocampus. The applicant will work in a multidisciplinary team, and the main work responsibilities will be to perform microsurgeries, two-photon microscopic imaging, and behavioral analyses in mice. The student will be supervised by Dr. Hua Hu and Dr. Koen Vervaeke Research of these two groups focuses on neural circuits (Roth and Hu, 2020, Nature Communications; Kriener B et al., 2022, Cell Reports; Chambers AR et al., Cell Reports, 2022) and spatial representation (Hennestad E. et al., 2021, Cell Reports) in the cortex and hippocampus. The position is available from September 2023.

More about the position

The fellowship period is 3 years. The research fellow must take part in the Faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within three months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. Qualification requirements

  • The applicant must hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in one of the following disciplines: neuroscience, biology, psychiatry, or medicine, with a minimum grade of B in the ECTS grading scale (or an equivalent grading system). The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS.
  • The Applicant must have fluent oral and written communication skills in English eventually: and a Scandinavian language.

Personal skills

When evaluating the application, we will prioritize applicants with the following skills electrophysiology, confocal imaging, and analyses of rodent behaviors. Competence in computer modeling and programming is a plus. Furthermore, special emphasis will be placed on the relevance of the candidate’s educational background.
