Position as PhD Research Fellow in Internet of Things (IoT) is available at the Department of Informatics in the Section for Digital Infrastructures and Security (DIS), University of Oslo.

The fellowship period is 3 years devoted to research education. Candidates may be offered one additional year by the Department of Informatics; the 4 years position then entails a compulsory work load of 25% that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and research assistance.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Starting date no later than 01.10.2020.

More about the position

The PhD fellow will focus on smart connectivity solutions for Critical IoT applications in 5G and beyond architectures. Critical IoT applications such as autonomous driving for the automotive industry, remote surgery for eHealth and cloud robotics for Industry 4.0 are characterized by their demand for extremely low latency and reliability.

The target of the PhD project will be developing novel algorithms and solutions to support zero-perceived latency given the application requirements, by leveraging Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) together with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The PhD project will have an experimental focus and involve algorithm development, prototype implementation, analysis and experimentation.

Qualification requirements

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Interested applicants for this position are required to:

• Hold a Master degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering or related fields
• Foreign degrees (M.Sc.-level) must correspond to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
• Have a solid background on networking and communications systems (familiarity with IoT and edge computing is a plus)
• Have experience with machine learning and statistics through course/project work
• Have experience with Linux and scripting languages
• Possess good interpersonal skills and show willingness to work as part of an international team

Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2020 to complete the final exam.

Grade requirements:

The norm is as follows:

• the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. Good skills with a Scandinavian language would be an advantage, but it’s not required.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:
