The Department of archaeology, conservation and history (IAKH) is comprised of three disciplines which in different ways study the past. The department has internationally oriented archaeologists, the only conservation program in Norway and the biggest group of historians in Scandinavia. The department has close to 100 employees, including non-permanent research fellows. The study programs span archaeology from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, object and paintings conservation, and history from Antiquity to the present age.

Central Asia is a key route for ancient human expansion out of Africa, with early human migrants leaving behind stone tools in thick wind-blown dust (loess) deposits in Tajikistan, deposited over the last 2-3 million years. However, much remains unknown about the timing and environmental context associated with the first presence of modern humans and ancient hominins in Central Asia. This PhD scholarship is part of an exciting cross-disciplinary project, involving scientists from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia and Tajikistan, that will answer questions such as when humans arrived in Central Asia and what environmental and climatic conditions were at the time. The PhD scholarship will likely involve extended stays at one or more of the partner institutions.
The PhD project will be positioned within the field of Environmental Archaeology, and will explore connections in the past between humans and their environments in Central Asia. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting, processing and analyzing soil and sediment samples from archaeological sites in Tajikistan using archaeometric tools such as stable isotope analysis and organic chemistry (e.g., coprostanols, bile acids), and inorganic chemistry (e.g., phosphate analysis). The project will be supervised by Professor David Wright and is funded by the Nordforsk Foundation, hosted at the University of Oslo. The candidate will be based in Oslo.
More about the position
The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month Completion Grant.
- A Master's degree or equivalent in Archaeology, Geography or Geosciences. The Master's degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline.
- Working knowledge of archaeological chemistry in relation to studying the formation of soils and sediments (geoarchaeology). Previous laboratory training or experience is desired.
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Oslo, applicants must, as a minimum, have completed a five-year graduation course (Master’s degree or equivalent), including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality
In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:
- The applicant’s background in relation to participating in fieldwork and independence in the laboratory analytical environment
- The applicant’s interest in questions pertaining to human evolution, particularly in Out of Africa and/or in the formation of Central Asian landscapes
- The applicant's estimated academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame
- The applicant's ability to complete research training
- Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities.
Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference.
