The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture has a vacancy for a PhD position

About the position

Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA), Nord University, Norway, invites applications from outstanding candidates for a three-year (or four-year) PhD position in Ecology.

This PhD-project will investigate how ongoing climate change will affect ptarmigan diet, food quality and fitness components. The candidate will have access to long-term data sets from our study system in central Norway, including data on diet composition based on DNA metabarcoding data and life history data from marked and unmarked birds. Some lab work should be expected, as well as field work in a beautiful alpine landscape in central Norway.

The successful candidate will be part of the Ecology research division at FBA.

The contract will be for a 3-year period without teaching or a 4-year period with a 25 % teaching duty.

The position is to be located in Steinkjer, central Norway, and will be available from 1st of January 2024.

Qualification requirements

  • MSc in ecology or related field with the grade average of B or better (or equivalent score) both for the programme in total and the master’s thesis
  • Strong skills or interests in statistical modelling
  • Knowledge of software R
  • Knowledge about DNA metabarcoding methods is an asset but not a prerequisite
  • Ability to conduct field work in remote alpine areas
  • A proven record in scientific writing (e.g., having published scientific paper) is a strength, but not a prerequisite
  • Proficiency in oral and written English is essential
  • The successful candidate will join the PhD program in Biosciences at Nord University and is expected to complete the study within the period
  • The candidate should fulfill the admission requirements and participate in the training component stipulated in regulations of the PhD program.   • Themes and perspectives from the applicant's master's degree will be given weight in the assessment of candidates.
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.
  • The applicant's description of motivation for doctoral work and opportunities for implementation.
  • Relevant experience from research work will count positively.

The annual salary for doctoral researchers (code 1017) is set at wage level 54, NOK 532 200,- in the Norwegian State Salary Scale.
