The centre started operations in 2016 and has been funded by the Research Council of Norway for 8 years. Partner companies include Equinor, TechnipFMC, Schlumberger, IBM, DNV-GL, Evry, Computas, Kadme, Numascale, Dolphin Interconnect, OSISoft, SAP and TechnipFMC. Academic partners are the University of Oxford, Simula Research Laboratory and NTNU.
The aim of the centre is to provide a vehicle for delivering industrially-relevant, innovative research through collaboration between the centre’s partners and through associated projects. SIRIUS has a central role in the innovation ecosystem around the University of Oslo and the engineering, IT and oil companies in South-East Norway.

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Industrial Informatics available at the SIRIUS Centre for Research-based Innovation located at the Department of Informatics.
The fellowship period is 3 years devoted to research education. Candidates may be offered one additional year by the Department of Informatics; the 4 years position then entails a compulsory work load of 25% that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and research assistance.
No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Starting date no later than 01.10.2020.

The PhD fellow will be working in the SIRIUS Center for Scalable Data Access in the Oil & Gas Domain. SIRIUS is a Centre for Research-based Innovation located at and led by the University of Oslo. The centre started its operation in 2015 and has been funded for 8 years by the Research Council of Norway and the SIRIUS partners. Academic partners are the University of Oslo, University of Oxford, Simula Research Laboratory and NTNU. Industrial company partners include Equinor, Schlumberger, IBM, DNV-GL, Evry, Computas, Kadme, Numascale, Dolphin Interconnect, OSISoft, SAP, BOSCH, Aibel, Aker Solutions and TechnipFMC. The aim of the centre is to provide a vehicle for delivering industrially relevant, innovative research through collaboration between the centre’s partners and through associated projects.
The PhD fellow will be part of the subsurface related activities in SIRIUS and will work towards the research and innovation opportunities around the Open Subsurface Data Universe.
The Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) is a large industrial initiative to develop a standard data platform for the oil and gas industry. It aims to revolutionize the industry’s ability to deliver new capabilities and reduce implementation and lifecycle costs.
The PhD fellowship will address a topic in the intersection between digital geoscience and the SIRIUS research programs Analysis of Complex Systems, Data Science, Ontology Engineering or Semantic Integration. The PhD fellow will collaborate with the SIRIUS industrial partners, OSDU Forum members, and geoscientists at UiO and will be a part of a dynamic interdisciplinary research environment.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
- Master’s degree or equivalent within the area of semantic technologies, formal methods, data science, databases or digital geoscience.
- Foreign degrees (M.Sc.-level) must correspond to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
- Experience with interdisciplinary research is desired.
Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2020 to complete the final exam.
It is desired that the candidate has background and experience that include theory and application within one or more of the following areas:
- Semantic technologies
- Formal methods
- Data science
- Digital geoscience
Inter-disciplinary experience and experience with industry collaboration will be evaluated as an advantage.
- Ability and motivation to communicate with domain experts outside the field of computer science will be an advantage.
The norm is as follows:
- the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
- the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English; mastering a Scandinavian language will be considered an advantage.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position.
