Postdoctoral Research Fellow in e-health - two positions

The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics.


The Department has more than 1800 students on bachelor level, 600 master students, and over 240 PhDs and postdocs. The overall staff of the Department is close to 370 employees, about 280 of these in full time positions. The full time tenured academic staff is 75, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

About the position

Two 2,5 year postdoc positions are available at the Digital Innovation research group, Department of informatics, University of Oslo, in a research project in partnership with the Center for Connected Care (C3). C3 is a center for research-based innovation funded by the Research Council of Norway. The aim of the centre is to develop knowledge concerning new and innovative health services like home hospital, remote monitoring and follow-up of patients. The centre is coordinated by Oslo University Hospital and includes 18 partners from other research institutions, hospitals, municipalities and business organizations. In addition, C3 is affiliated with a number of international health players.

The 2 postdoctoral positions are funded through an IKTPLuss grant from the Research Council of Norway for the project DigiRemote and part of a Norway-China collaborative research program. The DigiRemote project focuses on development, use, and scaling of IT solutions supporting remote patient monitoring and care in two contexts: patient rehabilitation at home after thoracic (heart and lung) surgery in Shanghai, China, and patient monitoring and remote care by both hospitals and primary care institutions in Oslo, Norway. The project involves hospitals, research institutions, and IT suppliers in both China and Norway. Based on interdisciplinary research, the aim of the project is to develop services, processes and solutions for scaling digital remote care based on the patient’s needs in a sustainable way that facilitates favourable conditions for the health industry.

Project description

The 2 postdoctoral research fellows will be members of the DigiRemote project team. Their responsibilities will be to take part in the project activities in collaboration with the research team, and to conduct empirical research on the services developed and tested out. Their research should contribute to the establishment of such services which can be scaled up to serve the user communities (health care workers in health care institutions and patients) at municipal, regional, and national levels.

One candidate should cover research related to the following topics:

  • digital innovation and transformation in healthcare
  • scaling strategies for remote care
  • design of information infrastructures for remote care
  • sociotechnical aspects of scaling

One candidate should cover research related to the following topics:

  • Study design, implementation and evaluation of clinical medical technology projects
  • the establishment of new services covering medical, organizational, and technological aspects related to the design, operation, and scaling of services.
  • developing and applying methods for early assessment of digital innovation and improvement work in the health service, and mapping health effects through clinical research.

Both candidates should be involved in research related to the new remote care services both in China and Norway. However, the collection of data has to be adapted to the further evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The preferred candidates for this position will fulfill the following criteria:

  • A PhD degree in a discipline relevant for e-health research like medicine or Information Systems. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and completed defence are eligible for appointment.
  • Having a research background covering the research topics of one of the positions as described above,
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research and qualitative research methods.
  • Excellent English skills, orally and in writing.

The following qualifications will be considered as an advantage:

  • Experience with interdisciplinary research and qualitative research methods.
  • Experience from working in the industry as well as in policy/regulation.
  • Experience from teaching and supervising students including at the master level.
  • Skills in Chinese and/or Norwegian.
