The Faculty holds significant competence in the various research and clinical disciplines, with good interdisciplinary collaboration. It is a modern faculty with approximately 450 students and approximately 450 employees. The faculty is also Norway's largest dental clinic with approximately 55,000 patient visits a year. The Faculty of Dentistry has two departments: Institute of Clinical Dentistry and Department of Oral Biology.
Applications are invited for a 3 year position in a Research Fellowship as a PhD Candidate in Tannic acid nanocoatings: promoting cell adhesion and wound healing response around dental implants to be based at the Faculty of Dentistry, Biomaterials, University of Oslo.
Project description - project nr 1a
This three-year PhD project in biomaterials science focuses on investigating the deposition and biological performance of multifunctional nanocoatings composed of tannic acid and functional biopolymers in vitro. The main aim of the project is to develop hybrid coatings that combine the anti-inflammatory properties of polyphenols with the reparative potential and bacteriostatic effect of the selected biopolymers to stimulate soft tissue integration and hinder bacterial colonisation on dental implant surfaces.

More about the position
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Dentistry.

We seek a motivated person equipped with scientific curiosity and an academic skillset suitable for advanced characterisation of biomaterial surfaces and the interactions between the material surface and the physiological environment within the body.
A prospective candidate for this position
- must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree in biomaterials science or chemistry with focus on biomaterials, or equivalent.
- research experience with molecular layer deposition and advanced surface-specific characterisation techniques, such as QCM, are considered an advantage
- research experience in investigating cell-material interactions is considered beneficial
- has good team-working skills as well as an ability to work independently
- has good communication skills, including fluent oral and written English
- has availability to go abroad for short-term scientific missions
- English requirements for applicants from outside of EU/EEA countries and exemptions from the requirements
- Ability to conduct high-quality independent research within a broad collaboration
- Interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- Willingness to work together with PhD and/or Master/Bachelor students in specialty field
- Self-motivation, creativity, genuine curiosity about the subject, work discipline, professional ethics, and ambition
- Strong practical and analytical skills
