About the position
The Faculty of TNM has a vacancy for a 100% position as PhD Research Fellow in CO2 capture and Utilization from September 1, 2022.
The position is located at the Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Porsgrunn.
The employment period will be three years of full time with no teaching obligations, and there is a premise for employment that the PhD Research Fellow is enrolled in USN’s PhD-program in Process, Energy and Automation within three months of accession in the position.
About the PhD-project
This PhD project is about utilization of CO2 captured from power station flue gas and is part of a newly Research Council of Norway funded project ‘ALCOhol-based PrOcess for Production of carbonic acid diesters from CO2 (ALCOPOP)’ in which the target is to combine new chemistry with appropriate process concept(s) for the synthesis of ethylene carbonate from CO2 and biomass sourced ethylene glycol. The work is a co-operation with SINTEF Industry in Oslo with the possibility for shorter term visits to their laboratories.
Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS) equivalent higher education qualifications in Chemical/Process Engineering. The degree must be accomplished before the application deadline. Proven experience in practical laboratory work including qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis is a prerequisite for the position. Process knowledge on separation technology and in particular membrane pervaporation technique is an advantage. Experience with controlled atmosphere experiments is also an advantage.
The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work. Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.
It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in PEA within three months of accession in the position. For admission to the Programme a weighted average grade of B or higher is usually required.

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 491 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position. In special cases, employment in code 1378 (NOK 482 200 – 618 600 a year) may be considered.
A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.
The Academic Appointments Board for PhD Research Fellowships is responsible for the appointment. An expert assessment of applicants will be carried out. The candidates deemed best qualified will be invited to an interview.
The person appointed must comply with the laws, regulations and agreements that apply at any given time to the post. Please note that approved work permit is a prerequisite for the employment. The research area for the position can include technologies referred to in the Ministry's export control regulations, and the candidate may be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
