The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences have a vacancy for a position as PhD Fellow in AI for hematological image analysis

About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a 100 % position as PhD Research Fellow in the Department of Microsystems from 01.10.2025.

About the PhD-project

A rapid evaluation of cell and tissue samples is essential for diagnosing and commencing treatment in patients with suspected leukemia, multiple myeloma, or other severe blood disorders. These conditions can often be identified by the microscopic appearance of bone marrow cells. However, traditional manual analysis using analogue microscopes is time-consuming and demands specialised expertise, especially for detecting plasma cells in multiple myeloma.

Vestfold Regional Hospital Trust in Norway has become the first in the country to digitize bone marrow smear analysis. This digital transformation has also paved the way for innovations like AI-assisted morphological analysis.

This project will research a self-produced AI model for automatically classifying plasma cells in digitised bone marrow smears, resulting in faster diagnoses for patients suspected of having multiple myeloma. This will lead to quicker treatment planning, and the time saved from microscopy can be redirected towards more direct patient-oriented work.
