Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) is an interdisciplinary focus field for material and energy research at the University of Oslo. SMN has focused on basic research in renewable energy and environmentally friendly use of fossil energy sources. The center consists of research groups from the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry, has about 100 employees from around the world and manages more than 80 projects funded by EU, RCN and others.

The position is for a period of 12 months.

Project description
We are searching for a skilled, creative and ambitious researcher to join our scientific activities within the field of battery materials. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of the solid-state electrolyte materials for Li-ion batteries and their advanced characterization under the project FUNCY-SSB funded by the M-ERA.NET research program though the Research Council of Norway.
The candidate will focus on development of solid-state electrolytes, optimization of materials using ALD, electrochemical evaluation and operando characterization including data acquisition, development of electrochemical cells for X-ray based operando techniques and data treatment. Experiments using synchrotron facilities are foreseen, depending on access and travel regulations. The candidate will work closely with all group members, who are involved in similar re-search activities and should have knowledge and understanding of the electro-chemical characterization of battery materials in addition to the advanced knowledge in X-ray based characterization techniques. Relevant tasks may be a combination of:
Development of novel solid-state electrolytes
Development of coating by atomic layer deposition (ALD
In-depth structural characterization of solid-state electrolytes using X-ray based methods
In-depth functional characterization of solid-state electrolytes
The candidate will work in a dynamic team of approximately 10 PhD, MS students and researchers and, therefore, should be skilled to work in team as well as independently. The Researcher will work in a large team with colleagues at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology and partners across Europe. Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) is an interdisciplinary centre, collaboration between five research groups in physics and chemistry, and spearheads the MN Faculty's efforts for sustainable energy solutions. The Centre comprises UiO’s focus on renewable energy, materials science, and nanotechnology.

Qualification requirements:
Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or a closely related field. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment
Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
Knowledge of electrochemical characterization of battery materials
Experience in synthesis and handling of battery materials and fabrication of solid-state Li-ion batteries
Experience with operando XRD characterization of battery materials
Desired qualifications:
Experience within the field of battery materials and X-ray-based characterization (XRD, PDF) and solid-state NMR evidenced by peer-reviewed publications
Experience with using large scale facilities (ESRF, Diamond, etc)

Salary in position as Researcher, position code 1109 in salary range NOK from 595 000 - to 730 000, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund.
