About the position

The Institute of Health and Society is recruiting a 3-year postdoctoral research fellow. The person appointed will work in the Department of community medicine and global health at the University of Oslo's premises at Ullevål Hospital.

The successful candidate will be part of a larger convergent research environment within the project "Hormonal contraceptives and mental health: A convergent, interdisciplinary approach (ContraMent)," funded by UiO's interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science. Starting date will be no later than 01.10.2026.

About The ContraMent convergence environment

This postdoc position is one of four PhD and postdoctoral roles in the ContraMent Convergence environment at the University of Oslo. Convergence environments are interdisciplinary research groups that aim to tackle major health and environmental challenges.

ContraMent aims to create new interdisciplinary knowledge on how hormonal contraceptives affect women's mental health across the reproductive lifespan. The project seeks to improve clinical decision making and inform public health policy. The work is organized into four packages covering pharmacoepidemiology, psychology, neuroscience, and clinical medicine.

The Faculty of Medicine offers a career development programme designed for researchers at the beginning of their career.

The duration of appointment is 3 years.

About the project

This study will be an observational study examining how young women choose hormonal contraceptives (HC) and how initiation affects daily mood and emotional variability. The study will be conducted in close collaboration with Sex og samfunn (https://sexogsamfunn.no/), Norway’s largest clinic for sexual and reproductive health. A cohort of about 3,000 HC users from the clinic will be followed using questionnaires at baseline, 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 months after initiation of HC. In addition to the regular questionnaires, we will perform ecological momentary assessments (EMA) which are repeated, real time brief surveys via a purpose built app to capture fluctuations in mood and other side effects as they occur. EMA assessments will be performed during the first three months after HC initiation.

The study will also include a qualitative part of HC use which includes focus groups with young women (≤25) and prescribers to explore motivations, expectations, and counselling barriers.

Responsibilities include refining details of the study design, managing recruitment together with partners at the clinic (Sex og samfunn), management of EMA development and data collection, conducting questionnaire/EMA analyses, securing ethical approvals and handling of personal data, and disseminating results.

You will work with:

  • Obtaining required ethical and data protection approvals.
  • Recruitment and follow-up of participants in both qualitative and quantitative substudies.
  • Development of a mobile app for real time data collection in collaboration with other division (including pilot testing and implementation).
  • Data collection: focus groups, administration of longitudinal questionnaires, and EMA data.
  • Data analyses: longitudinal questionnaires, and EMA data.
  • Dissemination of results through scientific articles, reports, conferences, and clinical recommendations.
  • Collaboration with other researchers in the project to integrate findings and promote interdisciplinarity.
  • Mandatory responsibilities include disseminating information, coordinating convergence activities, and managing administrative tasks in collaboration with ContraMent and the UiO Life Science initiative at the University of Oslo.
