The geosciences are the studies of the planet Earth and its comparative planetology; the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and cryosphere, the Earth's surface and its interior. The Department of Geosciences conducts research and teaching in most of the domains of geoscience; geology, geophysics, physical geography, geomatics, hydrology, meteorology and oceanography. The Department is the broadest geoscience research and education environment in Norway. We perform research at a high international standard and have five ERC (European Research Council) research projects ongoing.
The Department encompasses six scientific sections; Meteorology and Oceanography, Geography and Hydrology, Study of sedimentary basins, Environmental geosciences. and Crustal Processes. We host now a third in the line of three Centre of Excellences: PHAB – Centre for Planetary Habitability, and have a Norwegian Research School for PhD students (Research School for Dynamics and Evolution of Earth and Planets, DEEP).
The Department aims to contribute to the new and important UN Sustainability Development Goals, and are important contributors to IPCC (UN’s Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change). The staff consists of 40 professors and associate professors, in addition to postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, researchers, technical- and administrative staff. The Department has around 200 employees.
About the position
Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow available at Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo.
Starting date no later than October 1, 2026.
Four-year employment: The appointment is a full-time position and is for a period of four years (25 % of which is devoted to career promoting work, usually in the form of teaching activities, supervision duties and/or research assistance). This is dependent upon the qualifications of the applicant and the current needs of the department.
No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

Project description
The project is part of gigaCCS, where University of Oslo is one of the main aca-demic partners (Sintef lead). The gigaCCS Center will develop excellent re-search and innovative approaches for carbon capture and storage. The section for study of sedimentary basins at the department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo contributes to the storage work package of this large initiative in collaboration with many other national and international partners. The project is of strategic relevance for the CCS development in the North Continental Shelf as the project aims to provide new fault data and innovative workflows for fault characterization analysis.
The appointed candidate is expected to work with multiscale fault data from outcrop studies, reflection seismic data, and boreholes, hence, incorporating different scales of studies from microscopic studies of outcrop samples to large scale faults on seismic data. The project is part of the digitalization for risk management; therefore, it is expected that the candidate will be familiar with new methods such AI (deep learning) for subsurface studies (seismic interpre-tation). A part of the candidate’s job is to contribute to administrative work in the pro-ject and actively participate in communication with other partners and outreach. In addition, the candidate will have some teaching and supervision duties toimprove their academic skills.
In the first month of the position, the candidate should develop a research plan with expected journal publications that need to be approved.
The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Required qualifications:
Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defense are eligible for appointment.
Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in structural geology or relevant topics with a special focus on fault characterization, both fault geometry and properties.
The applicant should have worked on fault characterization at multiscale, outcrop (including microscopic studies of samples) and subsurface scales, using reflection seismic and well data.
The applicant should have some knowledge or experience of deep learning for analysis of geological data, preferably with the use of reflection seismic and well data.
The applicant must hold a valid driver license in Europe and be able to do fieldwork in Norway and abroad.
Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
All candidates and projects will have to undergo a check versus national export, sanctions and security regulations. Candidates may be excluded based on these checks. Primary checkpoints are the Export Control regulation, the Sanctions regulation, and the national security regulation.

Salary in position as Postdoctoral Fellow, position code 1352 in salary range NOK 595 000 - 690 000, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund
