Project description
The project studies how men’s changing family and working lives – two central domains of adult life – influence their health and cognition. The research addresses men’s demography, fertility and health from an interdisciplinary perspective. Men are more likely than women to die prematurely, and a great deal of men’s excess mortality is preventable. Improving men’s health and cognition is not only critical for achieving gender equality, but also for enhancing men’s potential in the labor market, understanding male reproductive and family decisions, and understanding how men could fare better in the modern world.
Within the project, the successful candidate will be able to develop a research agenda focusing on health effects of men’s participation in the family and drivers of the greater diversity in men’s fertility and family experiences. The research may include examinations of how gender roles, parental leave, and traditional values in communities influence men’s life outcomes. The candidate will work with rich linkage of Norwegian population register data and several large health studies.
The successful candidate will develop a research agenda that may include:
Health effects of men’s family participation
Determinants of variation in men’s fertility and partnership trajectories
How gender roles, parental leave, and traditional community values shape men’s life outcomes
The position is full-time for three years, with the possibility of a fourth year with 25% teaching or other career-promoting duties, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and the needs of the department. The HUP Section at the Department of Psychology conducts research in health, developmental and personality psychology, and hosts a large and diverse group of PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty.
