Ledig stilling på Universitetet i Oslo

Head engineer - Advanced Systems Immunology and In Vivo Imaging

Deadline: 07.11.2026

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest ranked educational and research institution, with 26 500 students and 7 200 employees. With its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally recognised research communities, UiO is an important contributor to society.

The Institute of Clinical Medicine (Klinmed) is one of three institutes under the Faculty. Klinmed is responsible for the Faculty's educational and research activities at Oslo University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital. With about 900 employees spread over approximately 425 man-labour years, Klinmed is the university's largest institute. Our activities follow the clinical activity at the hospitals and are spread across a number of geographical areas.

About the position

A 12-month long position for a highly skilled and motivated Head Engineer is available in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation and T cell biology, led by Associate Professor Johanne T. Jacobsen at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo.

Our ability to fight off infections and respond to vaccines depends on the immune system's capacity to produce powerful and long-lasting antibodies. This critical process of immune memory is forged within microscopic structures in our lymph nodes called germinal centers (GCs). Our laboratory is dedicated to understanding the fundamental rules that govern the output of the GC. We investigate how different types of immune cells communicate and cooperate within the germinal center to ensure the production of high-quality, durable immunity. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to research with significant translational potential.

Responsibilities

The technician will be entrusted with some responsibility for the operation of unique technological workflows.

  • Intravital 2-Photon Microscopy: Key responsibilities include animal surgery (mouse models), longitudinal imaging window implantation and imaging acquisition and live cell tracking using Imaris Software.
  • Single-Cell Multi-Omics: involves library preparation using both SMART-seq2 (for full-length transcript coverage) and the BD Rhapsody system (for high-throughput, multimodal analysis of RNA, AbSeq, BCR, and TCR).
  • Beyond the core platforms, the candidate will support several other core techniques in the group such as antibody production and Adeno Associated Virus (AAV) production for the generation of transgenic mice.

Qualifications

We seek a candidate who is not only technically proficient but also intellectually engaged and driven to push the boundaries of what is possible. The candidate must be capable of working with a high degree of autonomy and taking ownership of the lab's core technological infrastructure.

Qualification requirements

  • Relevant education from a university or university college at a minimum level equivalent to a bachelor's degree.
  • Extensive, documented hands-on experience with in vivo mouse models, including proficiency in surgical procedures.
  • FELASA certificate (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrable expertise in advanced cellular or molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience in either (a) high-resolution microscopy (confocal/2-photon) or (b) next-generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Full professional fluency in English (written and spoken), the working language of the lab.

 Desired qualifications

  • A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biomedical Science, or a related field.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with 2-photon intravital microscopy.
  • Practical experience with single-cell RNA-sequencing workflows (e.g., SMART-seq2, 10x Genomics, or BD Rhapsody).
  • Experience with immune repertoire (BCR/TCR) sequencing library preparation.
  • Experience with computational analysis of imaging or sequencing data.
  • Experience with mouse handling and has a FELASA certificate.

Personal qualities

  • Independence and Drive: A highly self-driven individual, capable of managing complex, multi-stage experiments independently and taking ownership of projects from start to finish.
  • Meticulous and Resilient: A rigorous, exacting, and structured approach to experimental work is paramount. The role requires a creative and persistent mindset for troubleshooting complex technical challenges.
  • Collaborative and Communicative: Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit are essential for working effectively within our international team.
  • Organizational Prowess: Superb organizational skills, including experience with digital lab notebooks and the management of large, complex datasets, are required to handle the data flow from our multi-omics pipelines.

Personal suitability will be emphasized in the recruitment process.
