Job description
ONE POSITION AS DevOps / SUPPORT ENGINEER FOR SENSITIVE DATA SHARING AND ANALYSIS is available at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Department of Molecular Medicine, as part of the EBRAINS 2.0 project and the EBRAINS National Node (through the nationally funded NORBRAIN Infrastructure), for a project period of up to three years. The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of academic departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The support engineer will work in a multidisciplinary environment at the Neural Systems laboratory (NeSys), in collaboration with the UiO IT department operating the national Services for Sensitive Data (TSD). The NeSys laboratory has a leading role in the Data Services of the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure - the European distributed research infrastructure for brain and brain-inspired research (https://ebrains.eu) and leads the Norwegian national node of EBRAINS (https://www.ebrains.eu/national-nodes/norway). Current developments are supported by the EU-funded EBRAINS 2.0 project and the NORBRAIN infrastructure project funded by the Research Council of Norway.
EBRAINS Data Services aims to become the primary research infrastructure services for sharing, integrating, and analysing diverse and multiscale neuroscience data from the European and global research community. EBRAINS was included in the European roadmap of research infrastructures (ESFRI) in 2021. EBRAINS Norway develops workflows tailored for sharing and analysing data from the NORBRAIN research infrastructure (www.norbrain.no), and the broader community of EBRAINS users.
As a contributor to the EBRAINS Research Infrastructure, the Neural Systems Laboratory (www.med.uio.no/nesys) is responsible for 1) creating new standards for brain atlases by developing software and resources for atlas-based integration and analysis of brain data, and 2) providing data management services for FAIR neuroscience data sharing and analysis. The DevOps engineer will be part of the NeSys team for FAIR data management, and will primarily contribute to supporting researchers in their data sharing and processing efforts using the Services for Sensitive Data (TSD), in close collaboration with the TSD team at the UiO IT department.

The DevOps / Support engineer to be employed will have responsibilities related to sensitive research data and metadata management and standardization, with the aim to publish anonymized metadata and data descriptors on EBRAINS, facilitating discoverability and interpretability. Responsibilities also include setup and maintenance of scientific data processing workflows based on publicly available and custom-built software within the trusted data repository TSD. Specific tasks include:
Contributing to metadata anonymization and standardization
Building workflows for reproducible processing of neurodata based on user needs inside a secure environment
Containerizing, deploying, and maintaining scientific software provided by EBRAINS and by users
Providing user support and training, and building documentation
Contribute to research projects through data analysis and the development of tools for streamlining analytical workflows
Qualification requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated and competent developer holding a software engineering or computer science related master’s degree (MSc) or equivalent, who enjoys working in an international and interactive environment. Candidates must have extensive experience with:
Software installation and package management (Python / Jupyter, Unix shell)
Containerization and deployment (Docker, Podman, Apptainer/Singularity)
Setup and use of scientific data processing workflows
User support, training, or teaching activities
Working with JSON schemas and REST APIs
Selection criteria
The successful candidate is a good team player with excellent problem-solving skills, a positive and proactive attitude, and an affinity for supporting and guiding users of various scientific backgrounds and technical competence levels. Effective communication skills and an ability to understand user needs are essential to this position. Awareness of EU regulations for handling sensitive data, and experience working in secure, isolated environments will be appreciated.
Experience working in an academic and / or multicultural / multidisciplinary environment is an advantage. Emphasis will be attributed to individual suitability and qualifications. Salary in position as researcher, position code 1108 in salary range NOK from 565 900 to 635 400 NOK, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund.
