The Department of Education was established in 1938 and is one of three departments at The Faculty of Educational Sciences which also has a permanent center.
The research is based on traditions from both the social and the human sciences, and the department thus accommodates great breadth in topics and perspectives. The department employs approximately 100 people; 49 scientific staff, 35 doctoral and post-doctoral students, and 20 administrative/technical staff. The number of students is approximately 900.
About the position
A permanent position is available at Engagelab as a full stack developer with genuine interest for data science.
We are mainly searching for candidates for position as senior engineer (position code 1181). If there are no qualified applicants, we will consider applicants for a position as head engineer (position code 1087).
You will work at Engagelab, a research based development unit within University of Oslo that supports educational researchers with design, development, experiments, and evaluation. The unit consists of ICT developers, designers, and researchers.
Our work is project based and involves collaboration and communication with researchers, practitioners, students, and fellow developers in the lab. Projects range from data collection management, data analytics, natural language processing, visualization, civic participation, urban sustainability, museum studies, teacher education, vocabulary training, and dialogic teaching. Some of our projects have reached an advanced stage of development gaining significant usage both domestically and overseas. We are proud to be open-source and to say our products are firmly based upon educational research.
You have a good sense for data and understand how to harness complex datasets and transform them via algorithms to produce useful results and visuals for students and teachers.

Work tasks
Developing tools and environments for technology enhanced teaching and learning.
Implementing data analytics tools in collaboration with researchers.
Integrating tools we build into existing learning environments (e.g., Canvas).
Designing and implementing research data collection strategies from using such tools and environments.
Maintaining information security in all phases of interventions; deployment, network traffic, storage, and analysis of research data.
Lead development processes
Other relevant tasks can be added if need arises.
Qualification requirements
Relevant university education, with a minimum of a bachelor's degree for head engineer (position code 1087) and minimum master’s degree with long experience for senior engineer (position code 1181).
Long relevant professional work experience can compensate formal education.
Application development experience in the web arena. This includes 'full stack' JavaScript experience including the use of libraries, frameworks, and environments (e.g., VueJS, Node.js), as well as good strength in programming languages for data processing and analytics such as Python.
Experience with data analysis and processing using languages such as Python or R.
Experience in translating requirements, needs, and interaction design into implementation and high-quality code, and have a solid familiarity with version control systems, IDEs, and workflow tools.
Ability to work under time and budget constraints.
Communication skills including Norwegian (and/or other Scandinavian languages) and English language.
Personal skills
Have excellent collaboration skills.
Be flexible and organized to maintain multiple project scopes in parallel.
Be responsible, pro-active and able to work independently.
Personal suitability will be assessed.

Salary NOK 575.400 – 667 700 per annum as Head Engineer (code 1087) or salary NOK 667 700 - 732 300 per annum as Senior Engineer (code 1181), depending on qualifications and work experience.
