Associate Professor in Care Technology and ICT Applications

The Department of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mathematical Sciences has more than 100 permanent faculty staff members, including professors, associate professors, and assistant professors. In addition, the department has several post-doctoral researchers engaged in externally funded projects and more than 25 PhD research fellows.


The department offers bachelor studies in: communication technology, automation and robotics, electrical power systems and electronics, software engineering, and information technology; master’s programmes in: energy technology, and software engineering; and a PhD programme in computer science based on the core research areas of software engineering, sensor networks, and engineering computing.


Faculty members at the department are active in international, national and regional research, and participates in research projects with many universities, research institutions and companies internationally and nationally. The research activities at the department includes the areas of software engineering, engineering computing, sensor networks, embedded systems,cyber-physical systems, robotics and control systems, and machine learning. The research activities have a strong applied profile and encompass application domains such as industry 4.0, smart grid, smart cities, health and care technology, subsea technology, and intelligent transport systems.

About the position:The position is associated with the newly established Department of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration with the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. The position is linked to the HVL Centre for Care Research, Section West with the aim to strengthen the cooperation in care technology and ICT with the research groups at the Centre for Care Research and at the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. The current collaboration includes educational programmes for health personnel in care technology.

Workplace is campus Bergen.

The position as associate professor in care technology is a newly established position. The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in the interdisciplinary research group in care technology, and be an active member of the care technology laboratory established at HVL. Specifically, we are searching for an associate professor with a technological background and with an interdisciplinary experience or ambition in the domain of health and care.

The successful candidate must have a strong track record from research at the international level in one or more of the areas of care technology, sensor technology and network, robotics or automation, or software engineering, preferably with a focus on health and social work applications. The position also provides ample opportunities for engaging in collaboration with other researchers and research groups at the department related to applications of ICT for smart healthcare systems.

The Norwegian regulations for academic positions make it possible for associate professors to apply for promotion to full professors. We are specifically seeking candidates with a promising research and teaching track record who can reasonably be expected to qualify as professors within four years. We expect the successful candidate to become involved in PhD supervision as an important part of this.

Key duties- and responsibilities:

The main duties of the position are:

  • Teaching, supervision, and curriculum development at the bachelor, master and PhD level, including development of bachelor, master, and PhD project proposals.
  • Strengthen the research and teaching efforts in care technology, control systems, cyber-physical systems, and IT-systems in collaboration with existing research activities at the department.
  • Expand and strengthen the research and innovation activities in care technology.
  • Development of project proposals for external funding, and research and development activities in cooperation with external research institutions, public institutions and industry in areas such as care technology, robotics, cyber -physical systems, control systems, and Industry 4.0.

Qualifications:

The successful candidates must have a research profile and background of relevance for care technology and ICT, and hold a PhD degree in communication systems, robotics, cyber-physical systems, automation, electrical engineering, computer science or a closely related field. Furthermore, the following qualifications and activities during the last 5 years will be evaluated (taking into account when the candidate was awarded PhD):

  • Ability and formal competence in teaching and supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students in communication systems, electrical engineering, control systems, robotics, software engineering, computer science.
  • Research publications and results, patents, innovations.
  • National and international contact networks, and experience from national and international research programs and cooperation.
  • Experience with the development of research applications for attracting external funding, as well as leading externally funded projects.
  • External/industrial collaboration projects, collaboration skills, and ability to work independently and as a cooperating member of a research group.

In the evaluation of the qualified applicants, emphasis will be on submitted and published scientific work from the last 5 years. Applicants will also be evaluated against their capacity for dissemination, innovation, and collaboration, as well as their potential for establishing relevant national and international research contacts. Personal skills such as the ability to inspire students and colleagues collaborate with colleagues and industrial partners, and to initiate academic developments in research, teaching and innovation will be emphasized in the evaluation of candidates.

The application must also explain how the applicant envisions to contribute to, and cooperate in, research, supervision and teaching in robotics, control systems, software engineering, intelligent systems, or system engineering. Applicants must be able to document pedagogical qualifications, such as courses and/or experience.

Lecturing at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences is normally performed in Norwegian or Scandinavian languages. It is expected that foreign applicants will be able to teach in a Scandinavian language within 2 years from taking up the position.

Short-listed candidates might be required to give a lecture in addition to an interview.

The position as Associate Professor is paid according to the Government's salary regulation, in position 1011- Associate Professor.
