The Faculty of Engineering and Science has approximately 300 employees and approximately 3,000 students. The faculty has a broad educational offer at both bachelor's and master's level in engineering and science, as well as PhD education in computer technology. The Mohns Center for Innovation and Regional Development researches innovation and offers master's education in innovation and entrepreneurship. The diving education offers a one-year vocational school education.

The main part of the faculty's activities are in Haugesund, Bergen, Sogndal and Førde, but we also offer decentralized education in Florø, Kristiansund and Stord.

The faculty's activities are internationally based and take place in close collaboration with regional companies, clusters, health trusts and the public sector, including other institutions in the university and college sector. This applies to research, development, innovation and not least education with student projects at all levels.

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Science, has a vacancy for a position as PhD research fellow in battery technology for a period of 3 years.

About the position:

The Department of Safety, Chemistry and Biolaboratory Sciences at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences opens a position for a PhD research fellow in battery technology for a period of 3 years.

The PhD research fellow will be part of the PhD program in Computer Science: Software Engineering, Sensor Networks and Engineering Computing. The research program in Computer Science currently includes 20 professors and associate professors, more than 30 PhD and post-doctoral fellows, and many master’s students.

Workplace is in campus Bergen.

About the PhD project/ work tasks:

Due to the limitation of traditional battery charging method, battery charging speed cannot be very high. In this project, we have motivation and ambition to develop novel high speed battery charging method using batteries invented in our laboratory to shorten battery charging time significantly. In addition, battery charging and discharging process and mechanism modelling is important and crucial in this project. The two main objectives of this project are: (1) Develop of novel high speed battery charging method in laboratory; (2) Utilization of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to simulate charging and discharging process and mechanism of this novel battery charging method.

High charging speed and short charging time are important for batteries applications in mobility devices in the market. This project will perform research work to solve the neck bottle charging speed problem in battery technology by developing brand new battery charging method using experimental and simulation techniques.

Research environment

The computer science research environment at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences has a strong focus on use-inspired and applied research, and on ICT as an enabling technology. The research environment has cooperation with many national and international research groups, and with national and regional industry partners. The research program includes the research themes of software engineering, engineering computing, sensor networks, and measurement technologies, grid computing and physics data analysis, machine learning, and interactive and collaborative systems. The prospective PhD candidate will work in close cooperation with the research groups oriented towards battery technology and computational fluid dynamics. PhD research fellows receive annual work expense funding which can be used for conference participation, research visits, and equipment. The place of employment is Campus Bergen, the largest campus of the university. The campus has modern facilities and active student life, including a student pub. The Student Society in Bergen (Sammen), which our university collaborates with, provides student housing and access to sports facilities at favorable prices.


  • Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, battery technology, computational engineering, or a closely related field.
  • MSc thesis (or equivalent research) includes battery technology, or computational fluid dynamics simulation.
  • The master’s thesis grade is equivalent to grade B or better on the ECTS grading system.
  • The average grade on coursework is equivalent to grade B or better in the master-level study on the ECTS grading system.

To qualify for admission to the HVL Computer Science PhD program, the MSc degree must include a significant computational component.

Candidates who will submit a master’s thesis (but who have not yet been awarded a master’s degree) may also qualify for the position, provided that the master’s degree is awarded within 1st of November 2023. The outline of the master’s thesis must in this case be explained clearly in the application letter or in an extra attachment. Candidates already holding a PhD within this field are not eligible for this position.

Desired qualifications:

A solid background in one or more of the following topics will be considered when candidates are ranked (in order of importance):

(1) Knowledge of battery technology, for example in Li-ion battery, Na-ion battery or Al-ion battery

(2) Knowledge of wireless charging technology

(3) Experience in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

(4) Programming

In addition to the required educational and scientific background, the following criteria will be evaluated (not in order of importance):

(5) Competence and grades on relevant completed course work,

(6) Publications (if any),

(7) Work experience in above-mentioned topics 1-4,

Personal qualities:

The candidate must be diligent and display the ability to work independently, supplemented with regular guidance, and is expected to carry out high-quality research and publish the results in international workshops, conferences, and journals. In addition, the candidate must be solution-oriented.

The PhD research fellow must enroll in the PhD program in Computer Science: Software Engineering, Sensor Networks and Engineering Computing at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, and therefore meet the formal admission requirements for admission into the PhD program.

An application for enrolment should first be submitted after an appointment is made and the supervisor(s) will help with this procedure. The candidate must be enrolled as a PhD student within 3 months from the start of the employment.

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation might be applied in the processing of the applications.

The PhD candidate will be assigned two academic supervisors at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, combined with an advisory group with members from both research groups. Initial salaries will be offered at grade 54 (code 1017) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale.
