About the department and the position

About the department

The Department of Game Development - GameSchool is part of the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. Our campus is located in Hamar, Norway, near the beautiful lake Mjøsa, and is connected to an industry-standard motion capture studio and a state-of-the-art VR Centre.

The Games School has 27 enthusiastic employees supported by an faculty administration and a growing number of contract employees. It is an international and cross-disciplinary environment.t We have an international vision and putting students at the heart of what we do. In 2018 3 students from the Games School won best student production at The Game Awards in Los Angeles. We offer industry focused courses in Game Technology and Simulation, Animation and Game related Digital Art, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Gamification. The department currently has 280 students enrolled in Bachelor’s Degree in Game Technology and Simulation, Animation and Digital Art and an Add-on program in Virtual and Augmented Reality. A new Master degree within Game Development is under development.

We encourages an interdisciplinary approach with an emphasis on industry standards and professional practice, in order to prepare students for extensive collaborative productions.

Besides education, the Game School plays a major role in fostering an agile game community through its events and activities. These include the Global Game Jam Hamar, attracting over 250 participants. There is also a vibrant exchange with numerous local indie game start-ups having their roots in our educations.

VR/AR and game companies are important for the region. The university is receiving significant support from local and regional authorities as well as private companies. In May 2018 the University, together with public and private sector opened PARK, an interactive digital centre for VR, digital knowledge transfer and motion capture.

About the position

Responsibilities and tasks

The position will entail work linked to:

  • Research within Game Technology and Simulations
  • Research groups
  • Active membership in national and interntional academic networks
  • National and international research projects
  • Teaching and supervision of students at BA, MA and PhD-level within game- and/or XR development
  • Quality development at the Department and Faculty
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Department Head

Other research and teaching duties linked to projects and commissions may arise.

Qualifications

Formal expertise

  • Associate degree in computer science, game development or related areas required
  • Master’s degree in computer science, game engine programming or related areas required

Pedagogical competence

  • Documented practical-pedagogical education and experience, preferably aimed at higher education, cf. Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions.

Applicants who cannot document pedagogical competence during employment are obliged to complete INN University's course in University pedagogy or equivalent within two years from the date of appointment.

Experience expertise - required and desired

  • High competence in computer science (programming, mathematics, databases) required
  • Previous teaching experience from higher education within game development and/or related fields required
  • Extensive publication list with International publications in high quality journals required
  • Competence in advanced AI desired
  • Knowledge of immersive (XR) technologies desired
  • High-level work experience from industry desired
  • Industry knowledge desired

Language skills

  • Good presentation abilities in English, both written and oral
  • Good presentation abilities in Norwegian (Scandinavian language), both written and oral
  • The working-language is Norwegian and English.

Personal competence

Personal suitability for the position is important, and especially independence, relational and communicative skills, good communication skills.
