About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacant permanent position as Associate professor in Martime Safety from October 1, 2019.

The position is at the Department of Maritime Operations and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold.

University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses.

The main profile of the university is to provide socially relevant education, geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

Responsibilities and duties

We are seeking applicants who have interest and ability to conduct high quality research, teaching and industry collaboration in the area of maritime safety and human factors. The successful applicant is expected to be actively engaged in connecting teaching, supervision, research and contribute to the development of national and international networks. The person will be responsible for research, teaching, support, research leadership and guidance in strategic areas of the University's network of researchers. The person is also expected to work with the active projects within the Department of maritime operations (IMA) and the Training and Assessment Research Group (TARG). In addition, contribution to the newly developed PhD-program, bringing new funds, projects and collaborations is also expected.

The position may be assigned teaching at all levels in the Institute’s programmes. The position may also be assigned teaching at other institutes within University of South-Eastern Norway.

The university also considers distance learning and e-learning to be a priority area, and the successful candidate must be able to supervise and teach students using online tools and digital media.

Qualifications

The applicant must have a PhD in human factors, engineering, psychology or another relevant field, preferably with a maritime focus. The successful applicant should have a broad background and research expertise in maritime safety, with an emphasis on theory and methodology. The applicant is expected to work within the area of future maritime operations. Including (but not limited to) safety in future autonomous maritime operations, human-technology issues related to new paradigms of operations and applying Human Factors knowledge to these systems. The applicant should have capability for research at a high international level, strong analytic and creative skills and process good communication capabilities. The applicant is expected to be able to attract national and international funding. Experience with teaching and supervision at all levels in the university level is preferred. In addition, experience as a project manager will also be considered as favorable due to various ongoing projects in the department.

Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English and proficiency in one of the Scandinavian languages is an advantage. Applicants outside the Scandinavian educational system (from high-school or equivalent) may use the following tests as such documentation of English competence: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

USN has a doctoral program in nautical operations in collaboration with three other maritime universities in Norway. The candidate is expected to be able to strengthen and support USN's initiative in this program.

The applicant should have capability for research on high international level, have in-depth knowledge and understanding of nautical operations, strong analytic and creative skills and process good communication capabilities. Since the research team is multidisciplinary the candidate must be interested in and capable of collaboration within a multidisciplinary research department.

The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability will be emphasized.

Most of the teaching will be in English, but because the language of some of the instruction is Norwegian, applicants with competence in one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish)will be preferred. Applicants without this competence may be hired with the opportunity to qualify within three years.

For appointment as associate professor, it is required that applicants hold a Norwegian doctorate within the relevant field or equivalent foreign doctoral degree or qualifications at the same level documented by scientific production of equivalent scope and quality.

Salary

Associate professor (code 1011): NOK 542 400 - 741 300 a year. Salary placement depending on seniority. In special cases, higher salary may be considered. A statutory contribution will be made from the employee’s salary to the state pension plan.

The Academic Appointments Board is responsible for appointments to academic positions at University of South-Eastern Norway. An expert committee will evaluate the applications. On the basis of the committee’s recommendations, short-listed applicants will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to give a practice lecture.
