About the position

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Martime Sciences has two vacant permanent full positions as Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Maritime Logistics. Commencement from 1 November 2019.

The position is at the Department of Maritime Operations and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Campus Vestfold.

University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses.

The main profile of the university is to provide socially relevant education, geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

Responsibilities and duties

The successful candidate will:

  • teach in our study programs as well as develop and give programs in future USN Executive Industry Education
  • complement the research activity at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) with the objective of strengthening the institution's scientific reputation in this area
  • collaborate with industry and the Norwegian Maritime Industry
  • contribute to raise third-party funding research projects and build up a strong network within the industry

The Successful applicant is expected to be actively engaged in Maritime Logistics and the future development of smart transportation, i. e. digitalization, automation systems, autonomous operations and their implementation into logistics. The candidate should also contirbute to the development of national and international networks.

The university also considers distance learning and e-learning to be a priority area, and the successful candidate must be able to supervise and teach students using online tools and digital media.

Qualifications

Candidates should have or be willing to obtain a PhD in logistics, economics, management or engineering, with a focus on maritime logistics, port operations, liner shipping, container transport, shipping operations or a related field. The candidate’s academic fields of interest should be in line with USN’s Key Competence Areas (Digital Transformation, Creating Value, Sustainability) and concentrate on applied research in innovation (in particular digitalization) and/or strategic topics of the container shipping industry and/or sustainable/green logistics.

Other academic qualifications might be considered depending on the affinity of the candidate with the position.

Our education should be research-based, in terms of both teaching, practice and content. Therefore, we want our teachers to have experience from, or being motivated to focus on the development of teaching practices and the interaction between education and research.

Applicants should possess pedagogical competence involving at least a half-year Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, or a shorter university college pedagogy course, and a minimum of one year’s teaching experience. Applicants who do not possess such pedagogical qualifications may be employed on the condition that they acquire such qualifications within three years of the date of their employment. Courses within university pedagogy will be offered.

The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent, and the candidate must be motivated to work in a team, share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.

For appointment as professor, an academic level in accordance with established international or national standards is required.

The successful applicant should have a broad and solid background and research expertise in Maritime or Shipping Economics or Logistics. He/she should be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more areas of research.

Because the language of instruction is Norwegian, the successful applicant must be able to teach in one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish)].

For appointment as associate professor (førsteamanuensis), it is required that applicants hold a Norwegian doctorate within the relevant field, or equivalent foreign doctoral degree or qualifications at the same level documented by scientific production of equivalent scope and quality.

Salary

The position as professor (code 1013) i remunerated by salary grade 72-85. Position as Associate Professor (code 1011) i remunrated by salary grade 61-77. Salary placement is dependent on seniority and competence. In special cases, higher salary may be considered. A statutory contribution will e made to the state pension.

Additional information

The Academic Appointments Board is responsible for appointments to academic positions at University of South-Eastern Norway. An expert committee will evaluate the applications. On the basis of the committee’s recommendations, short-listed applicants will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to give a practice lecture.
