The Department of Political Science is a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and conducts research, teaching and dissemination. The Department currently has 33 permanent academic staff members, 13 research fellows conducting PhDs, six postdoctoral fellows and ten administrative employees. About 1100 students are currently enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD study programmes in political science, as well as the interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree programmes in International Studies and Public Administration and Leadership, and the Master’s degree programme in Peace and Conflict Studies. The department is the host of C-REX Center for Research on Extremism.

Job description

Two Associate Professor positions in Political Science are available at the Department of Political Science, University of Oslo.

This is a permanent position and we expect that the successful candidates will contribute to the long-term academic development and research culture of the department.

Associate professors divide their time equally between research and teaching. The successful candidates will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Political Science. They will also contribute to the teaching of research methods at all levels.

The persons appointed will also carry out administrative tasks in accordance with university regulations.

Qualification requirements

  • Applicants must document research excellence, including a PhD in a relevant field and a record of publications in refereed international journals or with highly-respected book publishers. When evaluating research excellence, recent publications, as well as a clear and viable strategy for future top-quality research, will be given greatest weight.
  • It is essential that applicants can demonstrate a strong record of teaching commensurable with their experience.
  • Prior experience leading research projects, as well as a track record of national and international collaborations, will be taken into account.
  • Personal suitability for the position will also be assessed.

  • CV (complete list of education, positions, teaching experience, administrative experience, project acquisition and coordination experience, and other qualifying activities)
  • Complete list of publications
  • A teaching portfolio, preferably including information from student evaluations
  • List of reference persons: 2 or 3 references (name, relationship to candidate, e-mail, and phone number)

All documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language.

Formal regulations

Candidates who cannot document basic teaching qualifications at the time of appointment will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate in all functions that the position may involve within two years.
