A full-time associate professor position is available at the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo.

The Department of Chemistry is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Department of Chemistry is ranked as the premier academic research institute in chemistry in Norway with a broad educational offer of high quality, as well as top, international-level research.

The associate professor is expected to actively take part in the Section of Environmental Sciences (SMV) and the Department of Chemistry. The main scientific activities of the SMV relate to research and teaching within the disciplines of environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, as well as physical, nuclear and analytical chemistry. The SMV research focuses on biogeochemical processes in the environment, chemical dynamics and kinetics, development of analytical instrumentation and chemical methods for urban mining. The section presently has a core staff of 4 faculty members and a number of PhDs and postdocs.

The Section is a member of the Centre for BioGeoChemistry in the Anthropocene (CBA). The research focus of CBA is on environmental effects of climate change, including biogeochemical cycles of carbon and associated elements, water and energy, and to ecosystem responses and feedbacks. Together we aim at linking changes in atmospheric drivers to terrestrial, freshwaters and coastal zone responses and their respective feedbacks to the atmosphere. Changes in concentrations and fluxes of organic and inorganic compounds are studied at the atmosphere-land-water boundaries.

The successful applicant must be able to teach at all levels and to supervise Master and PhD students. 45% of the working time will be devoted to teaching as well as teaching related activities, and 10% to administrative duties according to current regulations by the Department and the Faculty.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of sustaining its role as a leading research faculty. Candidates for this position will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment with respect to academic credentials.

  • The successful candidate must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian Ph.D. in chemistry.
  • The candidate should document practical and theoretical competence in relevant analytical techniques (eg. MS, ICP-MS, IC, spectroscopy etc.), experience with environmental sample collection, preparation, fractionation and speciation.
  • The candidate should have insight into biogeochemical processes in the environment.
  • A scientific track record that confirms the candidate’s capacity to address relevant and challenging issues. The main emphasis will be placed on documented scientific qualifications, including scientific independence.
  • Emphasis will be put on the candidate’s scientific production from the last five years.
  • Teaching experience is an important factor in the evaluation and should be well documented in a teaching portfolio. The applicant should describe her/his qualifications in view of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)-criteria:
    • Focus on the students’ learning
    • A definite development over time
    • A research attitude to teaching and learning
    • A collegial attitude and practice
  • The ability of the candidate in obtaining external research grants, either as a single applicant or as a co-applicant should be documented.
  • Further, international network, outreach activities and the ability to create a good working environment and operate in a team will be part of the evaluation criteria.

This should also include a description of potential collaboration with future colleagues

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The candidate must be able to teach in Norwegian or in another Scandinavian language. Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment. Applicants who on appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic teaching competence must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years in order to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

The basis for assessment will be the scholarly production of the applicant, other qualifications, pedagogical or educational, the applicant’s qualifications within leadership and administration as well as the general personal suitability. In ranking the competent applicants, the full range of qualifications will be considered and explicitly assessed.
