About the position

The Institute of Agriculture, at the Faculty of Applied ecology, agricultural sciences and biotechnology, at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN) invites applications for a one year 100% research and teaching position in the field of agricultural sciences. Ideally the person will start in August 2023 and work fulltime for one year. The person will spend 50% of the time on research tasks within two research projects – this will be continuation of work for a staff member who is on maternity leave. The person will also spend 50% of the time in teaching/supervision assignments at the institute, with Campus Blæstad as workplace.

Responsibilities and tasks

The successful applicant will work on two ongoing projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

Project 1: «Grazing in carnivore forests for sustainable production of food, timber and biodiversity»

The overall aim of the project is to generate knowledge about how Norway’s boreal forests in regions with established carnivore populations can be sustainably utilized for production of livestock and timber, and conservation of pollinators.

There is some flexibility in work tasks, depending on the successful applicants’ quantitative and/or qualitative skills and interests. He/she can work on two work packages – one looking at depredation risk in free-ranging cattle, and one looking at sheep within carnivore proof fences. Possible tasks include: i) working with national datasets to explore factors that influence cattle depredation risk, ii) processing and analysing interview data on cattle farmers experiences with outfield grazing, iii) working with national sheep registry data to analyse weight gain in sheep inside and outside carnivore proof fences, and iv) processing and analysing interview data on users of carnivore proof fences (e.g. sheep farmers, hunters, hikers).

Project 2: “Forests and wildlife under pressure – systems analysis for sustainable solutions”

The project aims to address how Norway’s boreal forest can be optimally managed for long-term sustainability of forests and wildlife and their utilities for stakeholders. The successful applicant will be connected to a work package focusing on stakeholder use and preferences in the forest, and he/she will work with analysing a recent questionnaire looking at different forest use and preferences in Innland county.

Teaching/supervision and/or project assignments

The successful applicant will also ideally take part in assignments at the Institute of Agriculture, Campus Blæstad, and will take part in teaching bachelor or master level courses. The applicant can also be involved in projects based on field of expertise.

Qualifications

Formal qualifications:

  • You must qualify for the position of Associate Professor in the field of agricultural sciences, social sciences, biology, ecology, environmental sciences, or other relevant subject areas in accordance with the Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions.
  • Emphasis is placed on knowledge of and experience with using student-active learning and assessment methods within relevant subject areas.
  • Satisfactory digital competence associated with student-related work and current research and development work.

Language proficiency:

  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must document English competence through an approved test (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
  • Applicants with Scandinavian language skills (both oral and written) are preferred.

Professional experience:

Depending on the applicant’s choice of work tasks the following experiences are required: processing quantitative data, spatial data, and experience in statistical analysis, and/or; processing and analysing qualitative interview data. We expect the candidate to be passionate about doing research. A further preference will be given to candidates with good teamwork characteristics and communication skills, and documented peer-reviewed scientific publications or other writing experience.

Pedagogical competence: Documented practical-pedagogical education and experience from teaching and supervision at university and college level, cf. Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions. Applicants who cannot document pedagogical competence upon employment are obliged to complete INN University's course in university college pedagogy or equivalent within two years from the date of appointment.If we haven't received applicants who satisfy the competence requirements for permanent employment, a temporary appointment may be made for a maximum period of three years in a lower position, cf. the Universities and University Colleges Act §6-5.
