NMBU has a special responsibility for research and education that ensures the basis of life for future generations.

Sustainability is rooted in everything we do and we provide knowledge for life.

NMBU has 1700 employees and 5200 students and is organized in seven faculties. NMBU has a campus in Ås and in Oslo. In the autumn of 2020 we are co-located on Ås. Further information on NMBU is available at www.nmbu.no.

About BIOVIT

The Faculty of Biosciences is organized in two departments: Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences and Department of Plant Sciences. The main objective of the Faculty of Biosciences is to contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture and food production systems through basic and applied research on plants and animals including fish (aquaculture). The faculty houses Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE) and the research center for Research-based Innovation (SFI) - Foods of Norway.

The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA) provides fundamental, innovative research and practical solutions to improve productivity and sustainability across the agriculture and aquaculture sector. Currently, disciplines within the department include Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology, Ethology and Animal Environment, Breeding and Quantitative Genetics, and Genome Biology.

About the position

The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA), Faculty of Biosciences, at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant full-time, 2-year researcher position in feed ingredient processing for fish and monogastric farm animals, with possibilities for extension depending on available funding.

The position is jointly funded by Foods of Norway (www.foodsofnorway.net), a prestigious Centre for Research-based Innovation, and the project “FeedMileage - Efficient use of feed resources for a sustainable Norwegian food production”, funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The research project involves development of novel feed ingredients, and evaluating these in diets for farmed fish and /or monogastric animals. The focus will be on processing technology and evaluation of new feed solutions on growth performance and health in fish and /or monogastric farm animals by using established and novel methods.

Main tasks

Major research tasks in the project will be:

  • Develop novel feed ingredients and upgrade the nutritional value of existing feed ingredients.
  • Formulate diets and participate in feed production.
  • Contribute to designing and conducting experiments to assess the impact of novel/functional feeds in fish and monogastric animals on growth performance and health using state of the art tools (including nutrigenomic tools).
  • Processing and statistical analysis of data.
  • Generate scientific publications.

Academic qualifications

Required academic qualifications:

  • A PhD degree or equivalent in processing technology, animal science or biology. Candidates from other disciplines, e.g. veterinary science or food science, may also be considered.
  • Research experience with bioprocessing technology (e.g. filtration, wet and dry fractionation, autolysis and fermentation) and farm animals, preferably fish or monogastric animals.

Other desirable qualifications and experience:

  • Hands-on experience with handling of experimental farm animals, collecting data and sampling of blood, organs and tissues for analysis of biological responses in nutritional studies, would be an advantage. Experience in chromatographical techniques and biochemical assays would also be an advantage.
