Job description

A temporary position of Senior Researcher (SKO 1109) in Medieval Studies is available at the Department of Conservation, Archaeology, and History, University of Oslo.

The position is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and associated with the NFR FRIPRO project 324308 “Voices on the Edge: Minuscule Texts in Early Medieval Latin Culture (c. 700–c. 1000),” led by Professor Ildar Garipzanov. The position is available for a period of 2 years starting from December 2022.

The successful candidate will become a senior member of the project team. S/he will examine musical additions and pen trials written, before c. 1000, in the margins and blank spaces of pre-900 Latin codices. S/he will analyze independently the music and text of these additions and pen trials, placing them in their broader musical, notational, and liturgical manuscript contexts. In close collaboration with the project leader and other team members, s/he will produce and systematize relevant data for the project database.

Qualification requirements

• PhD or equivalent academic qualifications within musicology, liturgy, palaeography, ormedieval studies
• Competence in medieval Latin
• Training in Latin paleography and academic experience in early medieval manuscript studies with expertise in medieval musical notation (and preferably notation before 1000)
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
• Personal suitability and motivation for the position

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

• The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out his/her research tasks and contribute to the main project
• Relevant academic experience working with medieval musical notations (preferably before1000)
• Academic qualifications and academic production in the field of medieval music, liturgy, or palaeography
• International peer-reviewed publications
• Experience with digital databases of medieval liturgical music
• Ability to create and contribute to a positive environment for collaboration
• Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines on an international level
