The Department of archaeology, conservation and history (IAKH) is comprised of three disciplines which in different ways study the past. The department has internationally oriented archaeologists, the only conservation program in Norway and the biggest group of historians in Scandinavia. The department has close to 100 employees, including non-permanent research fellows. The study programs span archaeology from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, object and paintings conservation, and history from Antiquity to the present age.
A temporary position of Senior Researcher (SKO 1109) in Medieval Studies is available at the Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo.
The position will be linked to the ERC Advanced Grant project 101018645 MINiTEXTS “Minuscule Texts: Marginalized Voices in Early Medieval Latin Culture (c. 700–c.1000),” led by Professor Ildar Garipzanov.
The position is available for a period of 3 years starting as soon as possible.
Successful candidate will become a senior member of the project team. In close collaboration with the project leader, s/he will identify and record early medieval minuscule texts (“guest texts”/”microtexts”) added to Latin manuscripts before c. 1000 and will analyze such texts’ codicological contexts. S/he is also expected to analyze independently the paleographic characteristics of such texts for the purposes of dating and tracing their provenance, and to systematize relevant data for the project’s database.

- PhD or equivalent academic qualifications within medieval studies with a specialization in areas relevant for the project
- Competence in medieval Latin
- Training in Latin paleography and codicology and academic experience of working with early medieval Latin manuscripts
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
- Personal suitability and motivation for the position
The doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved.
In the evaluation of the applications, emphasis will be placed on:
- The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out his/her research tasks and contribute to the main project
- Academic qualifications and academic production in the field of medieval manuscript studies
- Relevant academic experience in early medieval Latin manuscript culture (c. 750–c.1000)
- International peer-reviewed publications
- Experience with digital databases of medieval manuscripts
- Experience with research projects
- Ability to create and contribute to a positive environment for collaboration
- Good co-operative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic collaboration within and across disciplines on an international level
In the evaluation of the qualified candidates the full range of these criteria will be explicitly addressed and assessed.
- Salary from kr 566 700 to kr 608 200 per annum depending on qualifications
