The geosciences are the studies of the planet Earth and its comparative planetology; the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and cryosphere, the Earth's surface and its interior. The Department of Geosciences conducts research and teaching in most of the domains of geoscience; geology, geophysics, physical geography, geomatics, hydrology, meteorology and oceanography.

The Department is the broadest geoscience research and education environment in Norway. The Department encompasses five sections; Meteorology and Oceanography, Geography and Hydrology, Geology and Geophysics, Physics of Geological Processes (Njord centre) and one Centre of Excellence CEED - Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics. The Department aims to contribute to the new and important UN Sustainability Development Goals.

The staff consists of 40 professors and associate professors, in addition to postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, researchers, technical- and administrative staff. Approximately number of employees are 240 at the Department.

Position as Researcher available at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo.

The successful candidate will join a lively, international research group focused on cryospheric sciences, hydrology, remote sensing, geohazards and geomatics .

The position is for a period of 30 months/ 2.5 years.

Starting date no later than 01.Sep.2021.

Project description

The MAMMAMIA project investigates processes responsible for glacier acceleration adopting a multi-scale-multi-method approach. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway (2020-2024) and performs field measurements in Ny Ålesund, Svalbard, in collaboration with several national and international partners. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collect seismological data in the field, and be responsible for processing and analyzing these data in context with other sources of information acquired within the project, in close collaboration with project partners.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition is to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Geosciences, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or Computer Science (or similar), with a strong record in seismology. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment.
  • The candidate must have a strong background in environmental seismology with experience in processing seismological data and applying state-of-the-art methodology for interpreting these data.
  • A strong experience in programing (Python/Matlab or other) is required.
  • A glaciology background and experience from cryoseismology are desirable.
  • Previous experiences in glacier fieldwork, numerical modeling and handling of large data sets are desirable.
  • The candidate’s publication record must show evidence of creativity and capability of independent research.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are necessary.
