Job description

An 18-month position as researcher (position code 1109) is available in a multidisciplinary group at the KG Jebsen Centre for B-cell malignancies, Department of Immunology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo.

The position is one of eight hospital or Uni positions that are funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a global partnership to accelerate the development of vaccines and is a regional partnership between the OUH, Norwegian National Institute of Health (FHI), Diakonhjemmet hospital, Akershus University Hospital. The positions will be in the research group of Professor Ludvig A. Munthe.

More about the position

The successful applicant will work in Lab at the KG Jebsen Centre that is situated in the Department of immunology at the Oslo University Hospital-Rikshospitalet in close proximity to core facilities. In addition, the person will stain, run and analyze samples at the mass cytometry core facility at Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) in a multidisciplinary team including specialization in infection and immunity and cellular proteomics.

The work will be embedded in established studies on immune responses in infection and extensive experience with other RNA viruses (influenza especially), autoimmunity and cancer and will be accompanied by studies on T-cell specificity towards Coronaviruses and testing of new antiviral mechanisms (patent file in progress). The laboratory of the KG Jebsen Centre is situated at the Department of Immunology, a 350-person department that includes the Blood Bank, several diagnostics sections, 3 Research Centers and about 120 researchers.

The successful applicant will work in an interactive multidisciplinary Centre of scientists, in a strong academic environment, focusing on immune activation and dysregulation, crosstalk between cells, signaling pathways and their outcomes in COVID-19.

The position is a fulltime position and will focus on monitoring vaccine responses in one thousand 3rd or 4th revaccinated high-risk patients that are immunosuppressed due to medical therapy or due to genetic defects. We need to help generate new guidelines for vaccinations for this high-risk group of patients. Existing positive and negative controls and biobanked samples from influenza patients will be compared to vaccinated and COVID-19 cell samples using mass cytometry analysis of phenotype and activation state of immune cells. A clinical trial with transfer of convalescent plasma in COVID-19 patients will be followed for biomarkers of disease severity and treatment success.

Qualification requirements

  • We seek a highly motivated individual holding a PhD degree (or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree) related to molecular biology, cell biology or immunology
  • Experience within mass cytometry or advanced flow cytometry cell culture techniques and knowledge of any of the fields of immunity to infections, immunobiology, translational medicine or related fields.
  • Candidates who appreciates working in an international and interactive environment.
  • The candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English.
