There is a vacancy for a Research position at MediaFutures: Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology & Innovation. The position is for a period of 2 years. We are looking for an ambitious and self-motivated colleague to join us in MediaFutures: Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology & Innovation. 

MediaFutures is a centre for research-based innovation hosted by the University of Bergen and is located at Media City Bergen. The centre is a part of the Norwegian Research Council’s Research-based Innovation scheme. MediaFutures is cooperating with industry partners from news media and media technology research topics like media experiences and trust, recommender technology, content production and analysis, content interaction and availability, and Norwegian language technology. The goal is to develop responsible technological solutions to societal challenges like AI, fake news, echo chambers, and political polarisation. The results will be new digital tools, analysis methods, and content types for the future of media. The centre performs research training within media technology and innovation. This creates outputs such as new prototypes, research articles, and software, as well as innovative start-up companies.

Primary Objective

Advance the Centre’s consolidated research and innovation agenda by conducting and coordinating cross-stream research, with a particular focus on AI-driven media technology.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct Cross-Stream Research:
      Develop, lead and carry out research activities that cut across multiple research and innovation areas.Contribute to joint research outputs and innovation prototypes that integrate results from different streams.Apply for grant applications that lie in the center’s strategic interest and integrate research and advance the center’s research portfolio.
  • Facilitate Knowledge Integration:
    • Bridge work packages and research areas, ensuring alignment of goals and research directions.
    • Identify opportunities for collaboration and initiate joint activities.
  • Coordinate the center’s research Consolidation Layer:
    • Act as the researcher responsible for scientific coordination in this layer.
    • Support strategic decision-making by synthesising research results and insights.
  • Publish and Disseminate Findings:
    • Author and co-author peer-reviewed publications.
    • Present results at leading conferences, workshops, and industry events.
    • Produce reports summarising cross-stream achievements and impact.
  • Organise Scientific Activities:
    • Initiate and coordinate meetings, workshops, and collaborative events for knowledge exchange.
    • Foster a strong scientific dialogue between academia and industry partners.

The position formally reports to the Centre Director at MediaFutures, who may delegate additional and other tasks over time.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within Computer science, or Information Science, or any closely related field. It is a condition that the PhD thesis has been submitted by the time of application and that the PhD has been awarded by the starting date of the position.
  • Demonstrated competencies and skills within programming and statistical analyses (e.g., in Python, R, etc) are a requirement.
  • A background in media technology & AI is a requirement, and knowledge in the centre’s research areas.
  • The applicant must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, as well as have the ability to cooperate with others and coordinate work.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English (this is the working language of the centre).
