Institute of Marine Research

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is one of the largest research institutes of its kind in Europe, with approximately 1,000 employees and a wide range of research facilities and laboratories of high international standard. Our main activities are research, advisory work and monitoring. IMR owns and operates six research vessels. Our main offices are in Bergen, and we have a department in Tromsø and research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen.

In January 2018 IMR was merged with The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES). The new institute will be a leading supplier of knowledge relating to the sustainable management of the resources in our marine ecosystems and the whole food chain from the sea to the table.

About the position

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has an opening for a permanent researcher position in the Ecosystem processes research group.

The principal areas of research for this position is in the development and use of Atlantis and Ecopath ecosystem models for oceanic and coastal ecosystems to investigate ecosystem structure, function and dynamics, and ecosystem responses to i) cumulative impacts of climate change and diverse human activities, and ii) to management interventions through management strategy evaluations. In addition to basic and applied research, the modelling activity will be an integral part of Integrated Ecosystem Assessments developed to support ecosystem based management of the marine ecosystems. IMR provides advice to national and international management authorities on environmental impact and sustainable exploitation of marine resources, based upon the best possible research and knowledge to minimize associated risk.

The work will be performed in a modelling team using a set of different models with varying complexity. The successful applicant will be involved in ongoing, multidisciplinary research projects, as well as being involved in writing proposals for new research projects. Extensive research collaboration with national and international institutions is expected and encouraged.

About the research group

The Ecosystem processes research group works on research, monitoring and management advice on ecosystem structure, function and dynamics, including climate change effects and impacts of human activities, using both empirical and ecosystem modelling approaches.

Requirements

Academic requirements

Candidates must have completed a PhD or equivalent degree, with competence in ecosystem modeling.

Other requirements

The successful candidate must have:

• Experience with ecosystem modelling.
• Excellent programming skills (e.g. C++, C, R, Fortran).
• Good quantitative skills and experience with data analyses.
• Good ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
• Good oral and written communication skills in English.
• A good scientific publication record.

It is considered as an advantage to have:

• Experience with Atlantis and Ecopath models.
• Experience in performing Management Strategy Evaluations.
• Good skills in project generation and project management.

The candidate may be involved in scientific surveys on research vessels and must fulfill standard health requirements for such work. Moreover, the working language at IMR is Norwegian. A working knowledge of the Norwegian language will be advantageous, and language training will be offered if necessary. Sufficient progression in learning to speak and write Norwegian is required.
