Stilling:

Research scientists (1109/1110) in demersal fish research, monitoring and advice

Application deadline: 4 March 2019

Institute of Marine Research

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is one of the largest research institutes of its kind in Europe, with approximately 1,000 employees and a wide range of research facilities and laboratories of high international standard. Our main activities are research, advisory work and monitoring. IMR owns and operates six research vessels. Our main offices are in Bergen, and we have a department in Tromsø and research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen.

In January 2018 IMR was merged with The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES). The new institute will be a leading supplier of knowledge relating to the sustainable management of the resources in our marine ecosystems and the whole food chain from the sea to the table.

About the position

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Norway has immediate openings for two permanent positions as research scientist in the Demersal fish research group. The group works on research, monitoring, and providing advice on demersal fish species, using biological, statistical, and mathematical models. The group works in close collaboration with other research groups at IMR and contributes to associated research fields, including impacts of climate change, ecology, and integrated ecosystem-based management. Extensive research collaboration with national and international institutions is expected and encouraged.

Area of research

The principal areas of research for the research scientists will include monitoring of demersal fish stocks in Norwegian marine ecosystems based on both catch sampling and scientific surveys. The scientists will be expected to oversee and take part in lab-work, and lead and take part in field work, including several week-long surveys at sea. Furthermore, the scientists will work with scientific survey data and commercial catch data to carry out assessment of present and future stock sizes of main commercial fish species using state-of-the art quantitative assessment models.

Working in multi-disciplinary teams will be an important part of the positions. The scientists are expected to contribute to international expert groups (ICES), e.g., fish biology and ecology, fish stock assessment, advice, survey planning and catch sampling. The scientists will also be expected to participate in public and stakeholder meetings to present and discuss the advice. Initiating, participating and contributing to research projects, both national and international, is also expected.

Requirements

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in fisheries biology, marine biology, ecology, or a related field.

The successful candidates should have good experience and skills in quantitative analysis (statistic skills in R or similar analytical software will be a benefit), as well as a good scientific publication record. Experience in fisheries management, interpretation and analysis of acoustic data, field work (fisheries surveys) and lab work is a benefit. The ability to work independently, as well as in teams, and to deliver results (reports, analyses, papers) according to deadlines is essential. Good communication skills and willingness to communicate both to scientific and public audiences is important. Fluent oral and written skills in English are required.

The working language at IMR is Norwegian. The candidate should have a working knowledge of the Norwegian language (B1 level or similar documented level of fluency). Language training will be offered to candidates without documented B1 level, and candidates must gain proficiency in Norwegian both written and orally (B1 level) within the first two years of employment.

We offer

The work place will be at IMR in Bergen, Norway. We offer a positive, challenging, and creative work environment, the opportunity to work at a national institute with a high level of international contact, flexible working hours, and a wide range of welfare services. The Institute offers a governmentally regulated salary as research scientist (salary code 1109 or 1110 depending on qualifications). For employment as 1110 research scientist a formal competency assessment is required. The assessment is carried out by an expert committee.

An excellent pension scheme through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Funds is offered, and other welfare benefits (see https://www.spk.no/en/ for more information).
