Norwegian Institute of Public Health

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health’s vision is better health for all. We produce, summarize and communicate knowledge for the public health sector and healthcare services. Our main activities are emergency preparedness, knowledge and infrastructure. Infrastructure comprises registries, health surveys, biobanks and laboratory services. The Institute is a government organization under the Ministry of Health. We have approximately 950 employees located in Oslo and Bergen.

The Institute is committed to diversity. We urge qualified candidates to apply for a job with us, regardless gender, age, disability, ethnic or national background, or if there are periods of absence from work.

The department consists of about 20 employees with backgrounds in statistics, bioinformatics, modelling, and epidemiology. We have an active research environment and participate in various national and international research projects. Our core activities include the development of statistical and mathematical models for disease surveillance, disease burden estimation, networks and dynamic infection models, as well as their adaptation to data. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health is responsible for several national registers in the field of infection control, which are increasingly based on genetic information. At the same time, we are working to include new types of data, such as the use of mobile data and data from social media. The goal is to understand better how pathogenic microorganisms spread in the population and how environmental factors affect the health of the people. The models are widely used to evaluate public health interventions, including vaccine effects, and to inform national decision makers.
