We conduct teaching and research related to management of Earth’s geological resources. Norway’s rich resources of wind, water, oil, gas and minerals have been and are essential to the country’s prosperity, and will continue to be in the future. The Department plays a key role in the development of technology and the education of graduates who enable value creation based on our natural resources. The Department of Geoscience and Petroleum is one of eight departments in the Faculty of Engineering.

About the position

We have a vacancy for an ambitious and enthusiastic professor/ associate professor in structural geology at the Department of Geoscience and Petroleum at NTNU.

Geology research at our department covers fundamental and applied topics and has particular focus on understanding processes leading to the formation and distribution of geological resources in the subsurface. We are looking for a candidate with strong research experience within the field of structural geology and who is highly motivated and able to contribute to cross-disciplinary work between our research teams.

The candidate should have clear scientific visions, interest in applying novel approaches, good educational and interpersonal skills, and abilities to establish and lead research projects.

Your immediate leader is Head of the Department.

About the department

The Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP) has mainly an applied research and education profile, with several research teams that operate in the forefront of their fields. Through research, innovation and teaching, the Department wants to contribute solving the todays and future challenges and associated risks to society including supplying energy and mineral resources for a growing population in a sustainable manner and without harming the environment and securing our habitat under the pressure of global change. The department is well embedded in NTNU’s strategic research areas including Energy, Oceans and Sustainability.

Our department carries out teaching and research across the geosciences, with topics on geo-resources and energy transition, as well as civil- and mining engineering challenges including sustainable use of the ground and the subsurface being key prioritized areas. We are about 140 employees including 37 permanent scientific staff. Our department is part of more than 8 larger research centers and initiatives and we run a range of laboratories and other research infrastructures, some of which are designated national research infrastructures.

Work tasks

We are looking for a candidate with a keen interest in strengthening both the education and research portfolio of our department. The ideal applicant is an early- to mid-career scientist, with expertise in structural geology, who is prepared to take on a leading role in establishing and organizing externally funded research programs. A good track record of externally raised research projects commensurate with the applicant's career stage is therefore expected. The ideal applicant is also someone who thrives in the interface between fundamental and applied research, and the interaction between academia, industry, and the society around us.

The candidates should contribute to the supervision of MSc and PhD projects.

This includes

  • In-house and field-based teaching of fundamental and advanced courses in structural geology
  • Contribution to courses with multiple lecturers
  • Initiate and take part in establishing external research proposals for the department.
  • Contribute actively to the teaching and research environment and to the development of the Geology Group

Required qualifications

  • A PhD degree in geology with emphasis on structural geology
  • Relevant research experience as documented by formal publication record of high international quality
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Field experience
  • Experience with digital mapping and structural analysis tools
  • Teaching and supervision experience
  • Experience with the design and writing of research proposals
  • Experience with management of larger research projects/programs
  • You need excellent oral and written English language skills

The position of Professor within Structural Geology requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2.

The position of Assistant Professor within Structural Geology requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred qualifications

The successful applicant should preferably have:

  • Teaching experience from higher education
  • Additional competence in one or more bordering disciplines such as tectonics, sedimentology, geophysics, petrology, mineralogy, landscape evolution, geohazards, engineering geology
  • Enthusiasm for field-based teaching
  • A well-developed national/international research network
  • Knowledge of onshore and/or offshore Geology of Norway
  • Experience with project-based work or project leader experience
  • A command of the Norwegian language sufficient for teaching students in the Norwegian Bachelor program (a successful applicant that does not meet this requirement must be able to do so in 2 years)

Personal qualities

  • Fresh and innovative perspective at the research discipline
  • Excellent communication and cooperation skills
  • Interest in developing future applications of structural geology in society
  • Ability to cooperate in the design and execution of interdisciplinary projects will be emphasized

We offer 

Salary and conditions

As a Professor (code 1013) you are normally paid from gross NOK 800 000 – 1 050 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

As a Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 700 000 – 900 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.  After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

  • Names and contact information for three relevant referees

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.

Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Candidates of interest will be invited to an interview, and to deliver a trial teaching session.
