Endowed position at the Center for Security, Crisis Management and Emergency Preparedness

About the position

At the Center for Security, Crisis Management and Emergency Preparedness at the USN, Vestfold County Council is financing a 100% three-year endowed chair. The position is available from 01.04.2019. The academic field is within security, crisis management and emergency preparedness. The post will be extended after the end of the endowed period.

In Vestfold and Telemark, there are several organizations and businesses that are associated with civil defense and emergency preparedness, and it is an aspiration to develop the region into a leading national player in this field. The endowed chair and cooperation with the Center are particularly important for access to relevant professional competence and cluster development, as well as the basis for innovation and increased value creation in the business sector.

The Center's purpose is research-based knowledge of security, crisis management and emergency preparedness. The Center will be an arena where practitioners and researchers from different disciplines meet and collaborate on research and development projects. The Center will be regionally, nationally and internationally oriented and is perceived as useful and relevant for public and private emergency response stakeholders. The Center will target several sectors and represent different disciplines from the University of South-Eastern Norway. The Center will help in developing increased knowledge about risk prevention and management.

The University's expertise in emergency response management, technology and maritime safety, public health preparedness, ICT security and collaboration between governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, will be key areas in the Center's academic portfolio.

The position has been added to the Department of Economics, History and Social Sciences at USN Business School. The immediate superior is the head of department. The main workplace is Campus Vestfold (Horten).

In connection with projects, meetings and other activities, travel between the University's campuses and in the region must be expected.

Responsibilities and duties

We are looking for a merited professor who can lead and develop the Center. The Center will be span across faculties and have an interdisciplinary approach.

The professor will have the daily overall academic responsibility for the Center. There are no staff responsibilities connected to the position. Professional staff who represent the Center are affiliated with one of the University's Institutes. The professor will receive administrative support.

Developing project applications and generating externally funded projects will be an important task for which the professor will have overall responsibility.

The endowed professor will:

  • Have a special responsibility for the research associated with the Center
  • Oversee the subject-strategic development of the Center
  • Facilitate user-driven research in close dialogue with business and industry
  • Develop externally funded research applications within the Center's subject areas
  • Develop and maintain regional, national and international research networks
  • Facilitate research collaboration across disciplines and faculties
  • Contribute to the development of the USN's educational services in the field of civil protection and emergency preparedness

Qualifications

We seek a professor who is acknowledged in their discipline. Applicants must document professorial competence in the fields of security, crisis management or emergency preparedness.

Applicants must further be able to demonstrate:

  • International collaboration and a professional network within the Center's subject areas
  • Experience with the development and management of research projects.
  • Experience with supervision of/or teaching of doctoral students.
  • Academic recognition (e.g. citations, scholarships, awards, etc.) in their research work

The position provides room for combining academic leadership with own research activities. It is expected that the appointed professor documents their scientific level in accordance with established international or national standards. This must be documented as part of the application materials.

There will be no commission for the assessment of professorial competence. Professorial competence in relevant subject areas must have been obtained before the application is submitted.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, collaborative ability and research leadership combined with practical experience related to the Center's subject areas. Good presentation skills in spoken and written English are also important.

Salary

The appointment is placed in position Senior Adviser (code 1364): NOK 658 300 - 922 300 a year. Salary placement is determined by seniority and expertise. In special cases, a higher salary might be considered. A statutory deposit from the salary goes to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
