The Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo is Norway’s most comprehensive natural history collection. For almost 200 years, preserved plant specimens, animal specimens, rocks, minerals and fossils have been collected, studied and preserved here. The museum is located at Økern and in the beautiful Botanical Garden, which is not only popular for recreation, but is a scientific collection in itself.

A temporary 50% position as a Research Technician is available at the Natural History Museum.

The technician will be part of the European Research Council Consolidator Grant project macroevolution.abc (Abiota, biota and constraints in macroevolutionary processes) led by Associate Professor Lee Hsiang Liow (PI). The main goal of this project is to develop a new model system using bryozoans to provide answers to previously intractable questions in evolutionary biology.

The position is organized under the Natural History Museum (NHM). The appointed technician will carry out research at the Natural History Museum at its Tøyen location(http://www.nhm.uio.no/).

The duration of the employment is until the 31st of December 2020.

Project description / work tasks

The main goal of the project is to develop a new model system using bryozoans to provide answers to previously intractable questions in evolutionary biology. The technician has the designated task of i) taking Scanning Electron Micrographs of both fossil and Recent bryozoans, ii) identifying, counting and scoring overgrowth interactions of bryozoan species from New Zealand (both fossil and Recent), iii) organizing and curating samples from our global collaborators for both sequencing and morphological work.

Qualification requirements

The ideal candidate is an expert in New Zealand cheilostome bryozoans and an excellent bryozoan taxonomist who has broad knowledge of cheilostome genera. She/He should be able to operate a desktop SEM and maintain its operation and should be able to assist with light photography using stereomicrocopes. She/he should have previously worked extensively with bryozoans and should be able to score overgrowth interactions within minimum to no training.

Applicants should hold a Masters Degree (or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian Masters degree).

We seek a motivated, enthusiastic and hard-working technician who is keen on working with bryozoans and who has the skills to complete the tasks at hand. Applicants must show good interpersonal skills and be willing to work in close collaboration with the project PI and other members of the project team.

The candidate must possess Norwegian skills.
