About the position:

A 2-year postdoctoral position is available in the Ecosystem Processes research group at the Institute of Marine Research in Tromsø, Norway. The Ecosystem Processes research group focus on ecosystem monitoring and research on ecosystem structure, function and dynamics, including impacts of climate change and human activities across sectors, using both empirical and ecosystem modelling approaches. We also provide scientific advice to ecosystem based management of marine systems.

Institute of Marine Research

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is the biggest research institute of its kind in Europe, with over 1,000 employeesand a wide range of research facilities and laboratories of high international standard.

Our main activities are research, advisory work and monitoring. The Institute owns and operates six research vessels.Our main offices are in Bergen, and we have a department in Tromsø and research stations in Matre, Austevoll and Flødevigen. In January 2018, the IMR was merged with NIFES – The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research. The new institute will be a leading supplier of knowledge relating to the sustainable management of the resources in our marine ecosystems and the whole food chain from the sea to the table.

The postdoctoral fellow will be a part of an interdisciplinary research team at the Fram Centre in Tromsø that utilizes extensive datasets on socio-economy, fisheries, aquaculture, biodiversity and the environment to develop sustainability indices for 81 coastal municipalities in Northern Norway. Together with the research team and the stakeholder group, the postdoctoral fellow will formulate sustainability indices from datasets. The major research focus will be to elucidate trade-offs and synergies between industrial development and the different sustainability goals. The research will involve data analysis of large datasets and the organization and implementation of stakeholder workshops.

Qualifications:

The applicants should have completed a PhD-degree in sustainability science, resource management or marine ecology. We seek a highly motivated and enthusiastic person demonstrating good communication and teamwork skills. The successful candidate should have qualifications in quantitative research involving large and diverse datasets and documenting experience with using relevant statistical modelling approaches.

Experience from interdisciplinary environmental research and user involvement is desirable. The candidate should be fluent in English and a Scandinavian language (oral and written).

Host institution and international partner institution:

The postdoctoral project and training will be based at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) at the Fram Centre in Tromsø . The project group includes 2 postdoctoral fellows (incl. the present position), and researchers from IMR, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), the University of Tromsø, NOFIMA, SALT and Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

The successful candidate must be prepared to spend a period with our project partner at the National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California Santa Barbara, US.

The postdoctoral project will be under the supervision of Dr. Erik Olsen (IMR), Dr. Per Fauchald (NINA).
