Professor / Associate Professor in Electrical Power Engineering – Second announcement

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacant permanent position as Professor/Associate Professor in Electrical Power Engineering. Date of commencement is set to 1st of January 2019.

The position is attached to the Department of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Cybernetics, and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Porsgrunn.

University of South-Eastern Norway

University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses. The main profile of the university is to provide socially relevant education, geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

The Department offers two bachelor (BSc) programmes and two master (MSc) programmes. The BSc programmes (3 years) are mainly taught in Norwegian, and the MSc programmes (2 years) are taught in English. The research is within the field of Electric Power Engineering and Industrial IT and Automation. Research activities at the department are organized into R&D groups; Hydro Power, Transmission and Distribution (HPTD), Telemark Modelling and Control Centres (TMCC) and Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART). The PhD programme at the Faculty is named Process-, Energy- and Automation Engineering.

Responsibilities and duties

The professor is expected to take a leading role in research and education in the master programme in Electrical Power Engineering with main responsibilities in at least one of the following fields:

  • Power System Operation
  • Smart Grid
  • Electric Power Analysis
  • High Voltage Technology

The successful applicant is expected to be actively engaged in Electrical Power Engineering and contribute to the development of national and international networks. The person will be responsible for research, research leadership and guidance in strategic areas of the university’s network of researchers.

The position may be assigned teaching at all levels in the Department’s programmes. The position may also be assigned teaching at other departments within University of South-Eastern Norway.

The university also considers distance learning and e-learning to be a priority area, and the successful candidate must be able to supervise and teach students using online tools and digital media.

Qualifications

The applicant should have a PhD in Electrical Power Engineering or similar, and demonstrate professional qualifications and/or scientific competence within analysis, optimization, control and protection in electrical power systems. Familiarity with the different components in the power system and knowledge of how different forms of energy generation interplay is necessary.

The applicant should demonstrate communicative skills that qualify for excellent teaching, supervision and dissemination, and good cooperation skills.

The language of instruction at undergraduate level is Norwegian. The successful applicant should preferably be able to teach in one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish) or be willing to learn the language within the first three year.

Our education should be research-based, both in terms of teaching practice and content. We therefore want our teachers to have experience from, or have the motivation to focus on, the development of teaching practices and the interaction between education and research.

Applicants should possess pedagogical competence involving at least a half-year Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, or a shorter university pedagogy course, and a minimum of one year’s teaching experience. Applicants who do not possess such pedagogical qualifications may be employed on the condition that they acquire such qualifications within three years of the date of their employment. Courses within university pedagogy will be offered.

For appointment as professor an academic level in accordance with established international or national standards is required.

The successful applicant should have a broad and solid background and research expertise in Electrical Power Engineering. He/she must be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more areas of research.

If no qualified applicants apply for a permanent position as professor, a temporary three-year appointment may be made if the expert committee consider that the person selected will be able to acquire the necessary qualifications to be appointed to a professorship within the first three years of employment. A new expert assessment will be completed by the end of this period.

For appointment as associate professor (førsteamanuensis), it is required that applicants hold a Norwegian doctorate within the relevant field, or equivalent foreign doctoral degree or qualifications at the same level documented by scientific production of equivalent scope and quality.

Salary

Professor (code 1013): NOK 658 300 – 922 300 a year. Associate professor (førsteamanuensis) (code 1011): NOK 534 100 – 731 400 a year. Salary placement depending on seniority. In special cases, higher salary may be considered. A statutory contribution will be made to the state pension.

Additional information

The Academic Appointments Board is responsible for appointments to academic positions at University of South-Eastern Norway. An expert committee will evaluate the applications. On the basis of the committee’s recommendations, short-listed applicants will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to give a practice lecture.
