Deadline Wednesday, August 15, 2018

University of South-Eastern Norway

University of South-Eastern Norway has about 18 000 students and about 1500 employees. The university is organized in four faculties, with instruction and R&D activities on eight campuses. The main profile of the university is to provide socially relevant education, geared towards specific professions, and adapted to the requirements of the workplace, as well as to produce applied research and development.

The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacancy for a position as PhD Research Fellow in Hydrogen Safety (dispersion and combustion).

The position is attached to Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology and reports to the Head of Department. The fellow will be working in the research group for Process Safety, Combustion and Explosions. The place of employment is Porsgrunn.

Qualifications

Applicants to the PhD position must have a Master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualifications in physics, process technology, mechanical engineering or chemical engineering and have knowledge of combustion processes.

The candidate should have published papers in the relevant field of research and should have relevant laboratory or industry work experience.

It is a requirement that the successful applicant is granted admission to the university’s doctoral programme in Process, Energy and Automation Engineering. According to the formal PhD regulations, an average grade B or better from the Master degree, in addition to a grade B or better of the final master project, is required.

Information about the position

The Research Fellow will work within the Norwegian Research Center on Zero Emission Energy Systems (MoZEES). The main objective with MoZEES is to be a Center for environment-friendly energy research (FME) with the goal to develop new battery and hydrogen materials, components, and technologies for existing and future transport applications on road, rail, and sea.

Hydrogen technologies have been demonstrated for use in zero emission transport systems in many countries and regions around the world. However, further developments are needed before these technologies can be introduced into other transport sectors, such as heavy-duty transport by road, rail, or sea. MoZEES will focus on battery and hydrogen value chains, systems, and applications where Norway can take leading position in the future.

The research partners in MoZEES is IFE, SINTEF, UiO, NTNU, FFI, TØI in addition to USN. The Center has over 25 user partners.

The Research Fellow on Hydrogen safety at USN will study hazards related to accidental release of hydrogen in confined spaces. The study will focus on experimental investigations in small scale geometries. The topic is related to stratified layers of hydrogen and air mixtures. This problem involves the formation of combustible clouds and combustion of these clouds. A contribution to the development of simulation tools will also be a part of this work. The study will help in safe design and operation of hydrogen systems.
