Department of Psychology is one of seven units of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and has 75 permanent and 70 temporary members of scientific staff. Degrees are offered at bachelor and master level, plus a clinical training programme, and the PhD programme has 140 students.

About the position

A permanent position as Senior Engineer (SKO 1181) is available at the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo. The engineer will work in the FRONT neurolab, which is affiliated with RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion.

Time and Motion. RITMO is a Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway, and focuses on rhythm as a structuring mechanism for temporal dimensions of human life. RITMO researchers work in a unique interdisciplinary constellation, with world-leading competence in musicology, psychology and informatics.

The researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities in sound/video recording, motion capture, eye tracking, physiological measurements, various types of brain imaging (EEG, fMRI), and rapid prototyping and robotics laboratories.

The appointed engineer will be part of a small support team working between labs, but with main responsibility for the neuroimaging methods. We have access to MRI scanners, scalp-and intracranal EEG (electrocorticography). The position will particularly be related to work with EEG systems and data analysis.

Job description:

  • Responsibility for the daily operation of the lab
  • Procurement, installation, support and maintenance of equipment in the lab
  • Program experiments in Matlab Psychtoolbox or E-prime/Presentation
  • Support researchers with all phases of running experiments in the lab
  • Develop routines for data management, including assisting researchers in developing data management plans, handling of privacy issues, and storage/archiving of data
  • Development of analysis pipelines and assist in analysis of data
  • Train researchers and other IT staff in the skills needed to use the equipment in the lab

Qualification requirements

  • PhD or MA degree and tailored experience with neuroimaging equipment and research. The applicant is required to document that the degree corresponds to the profile for the post. Relevant experience may compensate lack of formal education.
  • Skills and interest in research data management.
  • Experience with neuroimaging methods and relevant analysis tools particularly Matlab based
  • Knowledge about EEG methods and analysis
  • In addition, it is desirable with: skills in Matlab, Python and/or other relevant programming languagesexperience with sound recording/processing and stimulus production

Personal skills

  • Good communication skills, including the ability to “translate” technical terms and expressions to an understandable language for researchers
  • Excellent cooperation abilities
  • Pedagogical skills
  • Fluency in oral/written English and a Scandinavian language. Candidates who do not master a Scandinavian language, are expected to acquire such competence within two years
