The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences overall objective is to promote basicmedical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is responsible for teaching in basic medical sciences for the programmes of professional study in medicine and the Master's programme in clinical nutrition. The Institute has more than 300 employees and is located in Domus Medica.

Job description

A permanent position is available at the Department of Molecular Medicine for an Associate Professor of Medicine in the subject area of Physiology.

The position will be linked to the Division of Physiology. The Division has strong traditions within neuroscience and circulatory physiology, with a prominent international profile. Currently, the Division consists of nine professors/associate professors, permanently employed technicians and a large number of postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, Master's students and medical students in the medical research training program. The Division uses research techniques ranging from molecular biology and transgenic animal models to functional imaging and computer modelling, to investigate physiological processes from cellular to systems levels. The Division has its own core facilities for histology, cell culture and molecular biology, and has access to other core facilities at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences. Current research activities encompass a broad range of topics related to the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and functional interactions between these.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate and lead research, supervise PhD candidates, participate in teaching and in exam setting and assessment at all levels, and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Department of Molecular Medicine. The Division of Physiology is responsible for teaching physiology to students in the professional training programs of medicine (majority), nutrition and dentistry, and to students in the PhD and medical research training programs at the Faculty of Medicine. Candidates must therefore document in their application and demonstrate during the evaluation process that they are qualified to engage in teaching of all of these student groups.

Qualification requirements

  • PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in physiology. A degree in medicine (MD or equivalent) will be considered positively.
  • Documented pedagogical skills
  • Documented potential for project acquisition and project management
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

Currently, neuroscience is strongly represented in the Division. We therefore wish to recruit a candidate who will strengthen other areas of physiology, through a primary research focus or a research focus that synergizes well with the Division´s ongoing research, and in particular research in systems physiology. Applicants are thus expected to have a strong background in physiological research.

We are particularly interested in recruiting candidates at an early phase of their career who have already demonstrated a promising research trajectory, provided that her/his qualifications fulfil the evaluation criteria.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a three-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
