Job description

1-2 four-year position(s) for Postdoctoral fellow(s) (SKO 1352) with background in the social sciences, humanities or natural sciences is available at The Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM). The main objective of appointment to the position is to qualify researchers for a career in top academic positions within their respective area of study. The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of up to four years (25 % of which is devoted to required duties).

The Postdoctoral fellow(s) will be expected to particitpate actively in one or more of SUM’s thematic research groups.The successful applicants will join a vibrant research environment. SUM is an international research institution with a well-established track record of undertaking critical, independent and high quality interdisciplinary and policy-related research on the challenges and dilemmas posed by sustainable development.

Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated and structured Postdoctoral fellow(s) with excellent research qualifications that can complement SUM’s current research disciplines. SUM places high priority on individuals who can work well in a team and in a student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential.

Candidates must also:

  • Be able to work in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Be able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Be able to effectively interact with students and faculty
  • Be able to enrich the intellectual community of SUM through research and teaching activities
  • Have a strong research agenda indicating the ability to publish in high quality journals

Priority will be given to candidates with experience in the broad field of sustainable development. The candidate(s) is expected to prepare a project proposal aligned with one or more of SUM’s research groups.

Qualification requirements

  • The applicants must hold a PhD degree (or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree) relevant to SUM’s interdisciplinary research groups. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved
  • The candidate must have fluent written and oral communication skills in English. Knowledge of Norwegian, Swedish or Danish is an advantage

  • The quality and relevance of the project description
  • The applicants' publications, academic and personal qualifications
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the post
  • Experience with research collaboration

The applicant’s academic works are not to be submitted with the application. All applications will be reviewed by an assessment committee. The most promising applicants will subsequently be asked to submit selected academic works (maximum 5) that the applicant wishes to have considered in the assessment process, as well as documentation of other relevant qualifications.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented, academic qualifications, the project description, and the quality of the project as well as the candidates motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged.It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.
