A permanent position as Professor of Medicine (50%) is vacant at the Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine. If there are no qualified applicants for the professor position, it will be open for appointment to a position as associate professor. The position is financed by the University of Bergen, Faculty of Medicine and Department of Biomedicine.

The major focus of the position is to strengthen the existing collaboration between Shandong University and the University of Bergen in the area of neuro-oncology both in research and teaching.

The successful candidate shall work within one of the established research groups at the department. The work place will be at Bygg for Biologiske Basalfag, Jonas Lies vei 91 in Bergen.

Qualifications

  • The applicant must have a medical background and a relevant Norwegian doctorate or corresponding qualifications.
  • The applicant must have documented experience and competence in research on brain malignancies.
  • The applicant must have extensive experience with collaboration projects between Chinese (preferably Shandong University) and Norwegian institutions of higher education and research. The work necessitates travels between Norway and China, and the candidate should therefore have knowledge of Chinese culture and language.
  • The successful candidate will be teaching general and basic skills within the fields of anatomy and cell biology in the current curriculum for medical students.
  • The successful candidate will also supervise Master- and PhD-students at the department and participate in the general teaching at bachelor-level for the medical, dental, nutrition and pharmacy students as well as participate in other tasks at the department.
  • Emphasis will be put on the applicant’s ability to create a good teaching environment and a good collaboration with the clinical departments at Haukeland University Hospital.
  • Emphasis will be put on the ability of the applicant to create a good research environment.
  • Basic teaching training is a requirement. The successful candidate will be offered appropriate training if this requirement has not been met before the appointment.

Proven willingness and ability to cooperate will be of great importance in the evaluation process.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment. Norwegian courses will be offered.

Salary

Professor salary will be paid in accordance with level 77-78 (code 1013) on the government salary scale, at present NOK 731 400 - 754 900 gross p.a. for a full-time position. For an associate professor the initial salary pay grade is 67 (code 1011/pay framework 24.10) on the government salary scale; at present NOK 597 400 or salary scale 79 (specialist) at present NOK 778 700. Salary is gross p.a. for a full-time position; following ordinary meriting regulations. A pension contribute of 2 % will be deducted and deposited to the state pension scheme. In the case of a highly qualified applicant, a higher salary may be considered.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE (50%)

A permanent position as Professor of Medicine (50%) is vacant at the Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen. If no qualified applicant for the professor position, it will be open for appointment to a position as associate professor.

About the Department

The Department of Biomedicine represents an education and research center focusing on biological mechanisms involved in human health and disease. The knowledge generated may lead to new diagnostic tools and therapies. The research is primarily focused on the following topics:

  1. cancer
  2. neuroscience
  3. physiology
  4. protein biology
  5. nanotechnology
  6. neuropsychiatric disorders
  7. cell biology

The Department trains future scientists in a master's program and a PhD research school. Around 200 employees form the core of the ten thematically focused research groups. The Department manage three high-technology core facilities that are available to all higher educational institutions in Norway.

About the position

Research

The successful candidate must have a strong experience within the field of cancer research focusing on brain tumor malignancies. This involves extensive experience within the fields of molecular biology, cell biology and translational research. The candidate must document a capacity to establish well-functioning international academic relations with foreign research institutions.

The University of Bergen strives to strengthen academic and educational collaborations with Chinese institutions of higher education, and a neuro-oncology research program between Shandong University and the Department of Biomedicine has been established. The successful candidate will follow up, strengthen and expand this research program. The work necessitates travels between Norway and China, and the candidate should therefore have knowledge of Chinese culture and language.

Education/Teaching

The successful candidate will be teaching anatomy and cell biology courses as described in the current curriculum for medical students. The curriculum is under revision and the successful candidate will subsequently participate in the teaching of the medical students following the new curriculum.

The successful candidate will also supervise Master- and PhD-students at the department and participate in the general teaching at bachelor-level for the medical, dental, nutrition and pharmacy students as well as participate in other tasks at the department.

Documented abilities and willingness to participate in collaborative work will be emphasised.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment.

Basic teaching competence is also a requirement, but the successful applicant who does not have such competence at the time of his/her appointment will be offered training.

Reference is made to the University's General Regulations which state that as part of the normal duties of the position, the successful applicant may also be required to undertake teaching, supervision and work in connection with examinations in his or her particular field outside the organisational unit to which the appointment belongs.

The University of Bergen underscore that teaching qualifications are to be given real weight in appointments to middle and senior positions. This can be done by for instance sending in:

  1. evidence of completed teaching training
  2. evaluation reports of the applicant's teaching
  3. overview of scope and level of teaching
  4. overview of supervision of post-graduate and doctoral candidates, and results obtained
  5. student awards received
  6. own teaching publications
  7. own teaching compendia and material reports showing participation in projects related to the development of teaching, such as alternative forms of teaching, supervision or teaching environments.

Appointment takes place based on the recommendation of an expert committee and an independent assessment from the appointing authority including interview and any testing of teaching competence.
